I've lived in Wisconsin 45 years. In this part of the country SPRING and FALL weather are rarely if ever a gradual transition. What MOTHER NATURE does is seesaw between SUMMER-like and WINTER-like, until the new season takes over, sometimes several times a week, sometimes several times a day. While temperatures MOST days will be in the 50's and 60's, 70's and 40's are not unusual, and 80's and 30's not rare. You may need shorts and H shirts. You could need a parka. PROBABLY in between, POSSIBLY both. Snow is not improbable either. And while we have had many abnormally warm winters in recent years [global warming?], It does occasionally get down to -30's and even -40's [usually in JANUARY, FEBRUARY, or MARCH] and rarely [THANK-YOU GOD] even colder. I have seen it happen. And don't let anyone tell you it doesn't get warm in the summer. I've ocasionally seen 110 in July and August.

I worked at Roehl for about six mths. I was hired as an experienced driver and had to go thru a week of orientation, and a week w/ a trainer. It started out really good, dispatch got me home for weekends, didn't have long waits at shippers. then my dispatcher was promoted. It all went downhill from there. Inconsistent home time, long waits at shippers, etc, etc. was told I could request a different dispatcher, but at the time, my wife and I were pregnant, so I went local. I worked midwest regional, started out at .36/mile and had an Int'l 9400 w/ 65k. They never made me lie on logs or be unsafe in any way. I will give them that.

Interesting post Mudbuddy,I too worked for Roehl before I retired and found them to be a good, better than average company.Always home on time except for one time and that was about 20 hours late getting home.I was usually dispatched within 20 minutes of unloading, and they kept me running pretty good.I started there as an experienced driver, and only had two days of orientation, and then right to work,no trainer. My first dispatcher was by far the best one I had, because he knew how I liked to run,and tried to accomidate me.After he left things sagged a little bit,it took the next dispatcher a while to catch on.Overall I thought Roehl was a good company to drive for.Altough they are a large company, they are small compared to the really big ones,Schneider,Werner,JB,etc. As for cheating on logs thats a no no at Roehl, they will call you on it,as I found out on about my second week out.

Anyone know how Roehl's freight is holding up? Was talking with them about either National or NE Regional. Thinking I will become a trainer.

It's going to slow down some for the Winter months, what are you looking to pull? Flatbeds can pull for any fleet if their freight gets slow, and curtain sides can pull everything except flats. I hear the van guys do alright, but again, less options should the freight slow.

Most of Roehls freight originates or terminates in the Great Lakes Region, so living up there you'd stand a better chance to stay moving. Keep in mind, the regional drivers don't get hometime. From my understanding the most they see is a 34 hour reset. But you also stand a better chance of seeing the house throughout the week.

Roehl was, and as far as I know still is, hard up for trainers. Once you hit your six month mark you'd probably have no trouble getting in. They tend to keep trainers running too.

I'm as close to the midwest as one get without actually being a midwesterner (PA OH line). Interest is in VAN, don't like to work that hard - hence van, then trainer

Really couldn't see myself married to the Northeast. Does ROEHL still have the Groveton terminal? I had heard that Wassau papermill (the only reason for being in Groveton) was being trucked over to China?

Oh well, just killing time on a quiet Sunday morning!

IRISHGYPSY. You are correct about the Wisconsin weather. Never really know what to put on in the morning. I too am from Racine Wisconsin. The end of august I retired from Chrysler in Kenosha with 35 years there. Was trying to get into Schneider, but they called me a few days ago and said they have to cancel my training that was supposed to start on the 8th of November. It was because of the economy. Hope all goes well for you.
