Hello all, I have a start date for shaffer trucking on jan. 11, 2010 but recently had my application accepted at Carlisle carrier with no start date having to call each week to see if they trainer ready, now i have reviewed both companies, shaffers downfall is the reefer part of the job and carlisle is that you have to deliver to grocery warehouses and ne regional runs. Being a rookie driver I would like to drive for carlisle more cause they only work 5 days a week and they are a smaller company but if they dont have a start date before jan. 11 I will have to go with shaffer because I will be over my 60 days since graduation. Does anyone have any information on Carlisle carrier or drove for them because there is not much info. on this site?

Carlisle Carrier is a carrier that does some kind of food stuffs, possibly a logistics type deal that sorts inbound freight and delivers to the grocery places. Not sure if it needs sorting at the consignee, you should ask. It is palletized, I understand. If you go to the same warehouses all the time, they might know you and welcome you with open arms, as opposed to the one time wonders that unload there one time and never come back. The w/e off deal is tantalizing, right?

If your going to be going to Grocery Warehouse's anyway then you may as well be pulling a reefer. There loads will be set up better for offloading and lumpers. Dry Van Freight is bottom of the Barrel.

If your really worried about weekends off before you even get started on the road, then you may want to rethink your career choice.

Carlise Carriers uses on average 5 year old Internationals with the skinny bunks unless you are local and get a daycab. They generally run Unilever freight out of the York and Carlisle area to Grocery warehouses. The Pay is Fair for the work they do.

I worked for Sunflower Carriers years ago before it was consolidated with Shaffer. Shaffer was a Good company to work for but alot of times you would sit or be out on the road too long.

Of the two Carlisle would be my choice, knowing that I would be home most weekends, the pay was fair, would be treated with respect, but also be in nasty truck for the first year or so.

East Coast Dry Box is a better deal than outwest. The freight is buttoned up by good carriers here. The fly by nights that make it bad for the rest of us don't touch enough loads to lower the rates or the way we are treated at docks.

also alot of East Coast loads are being distibuted from hubs in Pa. One can find jobs running freight from the hub to CT,NJ,MA,NH and so on and be home almost every weekend.

The Road Drivers bring it in from OH or IL to be redistributed and run by East Coast carriers running just up into New England.

Only 4 years late to the party :). My neighbor has been with Carlisle almost as long as I've been with Barr Nunn. The Trucks are getting better at Carlisle but it looks like they still buy used?
