Unhappy Mother Bought Guns for Pennsylvania Boy Charged With School Plot

Mother Bought Guns for Pennsylvania Boy Charged With School Plot
10/12/07
Quote:
NORRISTOWN, Pa. — A troubled teenager accused of plotting a school attack built up a stash of weapons with the help of his mother, authorities said.
Michele Cossey, 46, was arrested Friday on charges of illegally buying her home-schooled son, Dillon, a .22-caliber handgun, a .22-caliber rifle and a 9 mm semiautomatic rifle with a laser scope.
The parents were indulging the boy's interests because he was unhappy, not knowingly aiding a school assault, Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor said Friday. The parents didn't know of the teen's plans, but "by virtue of her indulgence, she enabled him to get in this position," Castor said.
Authorities have said they do not believe an attack was imminent and are not even certain one would have occurred.
"This was a smart kid that clearly believes he was picked on and was a victim," Castor said. "He had psychological issues and began to act out on those feelings."

My dad bought me a shotgun when I was 12. We would go skeet shooting on the weekends. During the week though he kept the gun locked up. That I don't see a problem with. But going out and buying your kid an entire arsenal is a little ridiculous. The good thing is this kid never followed through with his thoughts. Hopefully mom gets to spend a little time in jail to think about what she did.

AGREED! I was brought up on a FARM and my father taught me to shoot at a very young age.

I could/can shoot anything from a Pistol to a Black Powder rifle.

We mainly used them for target practice and hunting.

His were locked up as well, but even so, I would have never thought of taking one to school!

I was the same way growing up. I got picked on alot in school but the thought of shooting any of them never crossed my mind. Besides if I tried taking one of the guns out of the cabinet without my dad knowing it I wouldn't be here today lol.

Geez, by age 14 my uncle had a couple rifles (which he still has), a pistol, and was reloading his own ammo.

When I was a kid, we had shotguns and rifles galore around our house -- most of them on gun racks in our bedroom closets. We were taught to use them, and house rules were that either my older brother or my parents had to be with us when we used them. And the rule was issued with enough sternness that none of us would have THOUGHT to use them unsupervised.

What bothers me about this thread's story is that the parents bought the boy the guns BECAUSE HE WAS UNHAPPY. Crap! My son was hospitalized a year-and-a-half with depression... and guns would have been the LAST thing I'd buy him!

This story continues to be front page in our local paper (Norristown being in our immediate area), and there is also an abundance of "local scuttlebutt", too -- some being that the mother was intimidated by the boy because he was known to bounce her around a bit. (Remember -- this isn't confirmed, it's just local gossip.)

This woman needs to have her head examined.
