USA 36 million drivers would flunk drivers tests

36 million drivers would flunk drivers tests

11/16/07
Quote:
Is it just your imagination, or do many of your fellow motorists lack even a rudimentary grasp of traffic laws?

Well, if a test administered by GMAC Insurance is any indication, one in six people cruising our highways and byways -- roughly 36 million licensed drivers -- would flunk their driver's test if they had to take it today. Not only that, but based on the 2007 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test data the state with the most road-going dummies is New York, while the most knowledgeable ones are out West to Idaho.

"The results were pretty eye-opening to us," says Gary Kusumi, president and CEO of GMAC Insurance Personal Lines. "Not only did they indicate that there are wide differences in terms of state scores, but there were significant trends that demonstrated the general public might have forgotten must-know items from when they first took their driver's test."
"Two questions consistently sent respondents skidding into the weeds," Kusumi notes. The first has to do with the correct action to take when approaching a steady yellow traffic light (Answer: Stop if it is safe to do so.). A whopping 84 percent of respondents spun their wheels on that one. The next biggest puzzler after that question had to do with the proper following distance from a car in front of you (Answer: Two seconds).

Also of interest from the GMAC Insurance test:
• Drivers 35 and older were more likely to pass
• Illinois, Georgia, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Massachusetts were the least knowledgeable states overall, with average scores under 75 percent
• Fifty-five percent of the respondents didn't know how many feet before making a left or right turn to activate their turn signals
• The national average score was 77.1 percent

Ouch!! Maybe GMAC insurance should consider upgrading courses for a break in insurance for their customers? Might do a lot of us a big favor!!! lol It's been 20 years since I took my driving test - 26 actually - and I still know those answers. Sheesh!

I forgot to renew mine before my 30th bday and so I had to take the test again. I got 100% on the test, which really surprised me, because I didn't study the book. I hadn't taken the test since I was 16. So I figured that I would fail it. I guess that I didn't forget what I learned in drivers ed.

Dumptruck There's no test for manners!

Knowing the rules to pass a test is nothing. Most people don't have a clue about unspoken socially- responsible manners on the road. It's like none of these people ever had a Mama.

And Drivers are not exempt. If they didn't have manners BEFORE they got in a truck, they sure don't care about them AFTER they get in a truck. The rest of us have to sweep up behind them and make appologies for them, and dodge their dangerous, rude driving tactics.

Anytime you act like a child and act irresponsibly, you force everyone else to be responsible for you. That's not my job. It's enough that I have to be responsible for myself, but to have to look out for selfish, lazy babies too, is more than I signed up for.

There's no way to check if a driver is ready to hit the road. We just have to assume that they are a responsible part of society and that they naturally give back to it. What we're seeing, is 1 out of 3 drivers who can't be trusted to do their part to keep this planet from self-combusting, from failure to act as an adult out here on the road. No wonder four-wheelers disrespect us.

There ought to be a training phase to assure all of the rest of us Drivers out here, that you actually give-a sh-- and want to be a part of this sub-culture. If you don't want to 'do-the-right-thing,' then stay home. You can leave your garbage on the floor, in your own home!

Thanks. I feel better now . . . . . . . . . . . .

P.S. And how are these illegals passing our CDL tests, if they can't speak English? How is THAT happening? And how can we stop it? It is So-o-o destroying our nation!

Just because drivers have a CDL doesn't say that they can drive...Nor does a training program from a trucking company.

Our driving problems in this country is caused by ME. THAT IS WHAT EVERYONE THINKS ABOUT IS ME. I want everyone out of my way, because I'm important and I have places to go and things to do.
I'm more important then anyone else.

when we think about helping others we have less problems. So if everyone would just give a little on the road then there would be less of it's the truckdrivers fault. Also it would help if they knew the rules of the road.

two wrongs never make a right!!!
