Gunman opens fire at Omaha mall, killing 9

12/5/07
Quote:
OMAHA, Neb. - A sniper opened fire at a busy Omaha mall, killing at least eight people, wounding at least five others and then killing himself, police officials said.
Sgt. Teresa Negron said most of the dead were inside Von Maur department store at Westroads Mall. She added that the shooter acted alone. The gunman was found dead on the third floor of Von Maur.
Police told NBC affiliate WOWT-TV that the gunman was a 19-year-old man from Bellevue, Neb., who left a suicide note in his home stating, "I'm going out in style." The man’s vehicle was found in the mall parking lot. Bellevue is in Sarpy County, which is south of Omaha and is home to Offutt Air Force Base.
Witnesses told WOWT-TV that the shooter pointed a gun over a third-floor railing and opened fire. Police locked the mall down in the aftermath.

My thoughts are with those families that lost members today. This is so tragic.

Quite a shock for a small town like Bellevue. So sad for the families.

Same thing I've always wondered about. Just because you are a loser and can't do any thing with your life is no reason to destroy other people's lives!

As horrible as this incident is for the families in NE, just imagine how bad it could really get if a terrorist group coordinated multiple attacks in each city in multiple cities. It wouldn't be hard to duplicate the horrors of 9/11 if this were to happen.

Thumbs down Yeah..but here's my gripe!

This is all tragic, but it has accomplished the shooter's purpose---going down in history as 'infamous!' They cant get attention and notoriety any other way than killing random, innocent ppl! Pretty disgusting!! But, the news media (esp FoxNews) gave it soooo much time and attention (blow-by-blow) that this incident will propagate more like crimes......sad

Our stations here have been filled with this news. Last night, there were no regular programs on the tube, because of this incident.

As the news unfolds about this kid, I'm getting the impression that this is a case of the system failing. He had been a ward of the state since 2002. The system did him no good, because he didn't get the services needed. Its sad really, because I believe that something could have been done, early on, but there are so many in the system, that none of them get the proper attention.

As a former foster parent, I can tell you that the services needed for these troubled kids, aren't offered. They are thrown into the court systems, and placed into homes that are unequipped to handle them, because the foster parents are only given so much information about the child, not all of the information, so that they can be prepared for situations that may arise.

We had to take classes, and did a week long course in Lincoln to become licensed, but we were NOT prepared for what we encountered with our foster daughter. And there was NO help, when situations arose with her. The social workers are tooo overloaded to give the proper attention to the needs of the kids.

I was just in a chat-room that my wife was interested in and couldn't get to work for her. It's amazing that foreign people blame this on so many things, when it's just a crazy person that manged to get a weapon. I feel sorrow for the families involved, but I don't really think it's preventable by denying a weapon, far worse weapons are everywhere, all it takes is very little imagination.

All of these shooting sprees have in common a need for notoriety, to be noticed, even famous, in death as they never were in life, most of them figure to be killed rather than captured.

The guy that held hostages in New Hampshire at the Clinton campaign office thought he would be killed, he didn't kill anyone else, he was trying for suicide by cop, this fellow in Nebraska was determined to die and take a bunch of people with him; he was crazy enough that he succeeded.

More security probably won't help. Some people are taunted more than deterred by authority, and the security is easily breached, again by anyone with a little imagination and the will to do it

the problem with all these nut jobs is not they have access to firearms, it is that they do these shootings where they know no else is armed.

Virginia Tech- guns not allowed.
Every high school shooting- guns not allowed.
Every mall shooting- guns not allowed.
Workplace shootings- guns not allowed

These types of crimes will decrease dramatically if and when people are allowed to carry concealed weapons everywhere.

Shooting fish in a barrel is not so easy if the fish are shooting back.

I grew up around guns and we even had an 'unlocked' gun cabinet in our house! The differences are that we respected the responsibility of owning & handling firearms...that, and my generation was not as 'sick & perverse' as this current one!!
