FDA: Cloned animals safe for consumption

FDA: Cloned animals safe for consumption
1/15/08
Quote:
WASHINGTON - Meat and milk from cloned animals is as safe as that from their counterparts bred the old-fashioned way, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday.
The decision removes the last U.S. regulatory hurdle to marketing products from cloned cows, pigs and goats, and puts the FDA in concert with recent safety assessments from European food regulators and several other nations.
"The data show that healthy adult clones are virtually indistinguishable" from their counterparts, concludes FDA's 900-plus page safety report.
But for economic reasons, it will be years before many foods from cloned animals reach store shelves. At $10,000 to $20,000 per animal, they're a lot more expensive than ordinary cows. That means producers likely will us clones' offspring for meat, not the clones themselves.
In addition, several large food companies — including dairy giant Dean Foods Co. and Hormel Foods Corp. — have said they have no plans to sell milk or meat from cloned animals, because of consumer anxiety about the technology.
With FDA's ruling, "If you ask what's for dinner, it means just about anything you can cook up in a laboratory," said Carol Tucker-Foreman of the Consumer Federation of America, who pledged to push for more food producers to shun cloned animals.
The two main U.S. cloning companies, Viagen Inc. and Trans Ova Genetics, already have produced more than 600 cloned animals for U.S. breeders, including copies of prize-winning cows and rodeo bulls.

I am not sure I like the idea of cloned meat. I don't trust the FDA as far as I could throw them, they sure aren't gonna tell me if it's not safe.

Look at the drugs they approve that have HORRIBLE side effects, why do they approve them? Follow the money trail.
I figure it's the same way with this cloning stuff, follow the money.

I have to think through the milk and meat part
But as far as side effects go
Some people live horrible lives with sicknesses that are so bad they will take a trade off of hurt over pain. Or vice versa

I an taking a wait and see approach on this. This is still a pretty new procedure. It might be years before any side effects will show up. I would like to see a larger study spanning several more years before deciding.

Unfortunately, they aren't going to wait for a few more years...they want to start selling ASAP.

I don't understand why! Iam confused with why do we need to clone our meat sources??

ARE we selling to much of our food products to China?

I don't understand that either. We do sell alot of beef to other countries but I don't think it's really effecting supplies here.

I can agree with that, but, then there are cases where a drug gets approved for an issue that isn't life threatening or really effecting the quality of your life, and then this drug causes problems far worse than what you were being treated for. It's because of things like that, that makes me not trust the FDA on the cloning of meat and milk being safe.
