Survivalists prepare

Energy fears looming, new survivalists prepare

BUSKIRK, N.Y. - A few years ago, Kathleen Breault was just another suburban grandma, driving countless hours every week, stopping for lunch at McDonald's, buying clothes at the mall, watching TV in the evenings.
That was before Breault heard an author talk about the bleak future of the world's oil supply. Now, she's preparing for the world as we know it to disappear.

Breault cut her driving time in half. She switched to a diet of locally grown foods near her upstate New York home and lost 70 pounds. She sliced up her credit cards, banished her television and swore off plane travel. She began relying on a wood-burning stove.

"I was panic-stricken," the 50-year-old recalled, her voice shaking. "Devastated. Depressed. Afraid. Vulnerable. Weak. Alone. Just terrible."

Herein lies the problem for "survivalist"

Classic case of waiting until the last minute, before you start seeing things in the shadows. Their own fear feeding others into a frenzy beyond belief.

My neighbors see nothing differant going on at my house. Even though I have canned and dry goods stock piled out the ###.

It's been that way for long time at my house. And not because we are paranoid. But because I've always been of the opinion we should have these things stockpiled.

Our economy had been run on JIT stocking methods for years. To reduce cost to businesses. The real cost is to customers, when something effects the supply chain for more than a couple of days

Supply and demand, place a whole new meaning on high prices when events like Katrina happen and we are unprepared. During Katrina, I could BUY a gallon of water to make coffee with. But the truckstops (some) in that area refused to make coffee.

I believe the proper term for most of these people would be stockpiler or hoarder.

A true survivalist is able to live off the land with no prior planning.

A true survivalist would also be alone, in most cases.

I can survive off the land. I know my local fauna, and I'm very adept at trapping, hunting, grabbling, and reading game sign. I choose not to leave it to chance for the remainder of my family though. The better prepared, the better the odds.

Anyone who has survived for days on end will tell you, the hardest times they went through. Were periods they were unable to gather food for themselves. Injury and illness are a fact of life not to be taken lightly by even the most adept survivalist. #### happens.

Stockpiles are meant for these times. Not for times you can gather food easily.

Even "Mr Survival" himself, will geek and run. When the circumstances are right.

I listen to stories about the great depression
Watching clips on the history channel
It seems many were not even close to being ready for a collapse and needed government help, bet the left would love that
Urban survival is more than being able to live off the land
Because if the land includes non traditional methods of grazing for food via canned food then its still survival

I like to refer to those, as targets. There are more people who can survive off of "canned goods" than there are places to collect them. In an urban setting, it will boil down to fire power. Who has the most?

Lock & Load.
Will we become a nation of cannibals?
I hear human meat tastes a lot like chicken.

I read a great book about urban survival
Swan Song by Robert McCammon
It had a small twist I didn't like
Being that I like futuristic post destructional scenarios it was great

That was an excellent book. I thought it made Steven King "The Stand" read like a comic book.

I actualy read Swan Song before The Stand. Talk about a huge letdown.
