I am looking to apply for these jobs. Anyone have any idea on which companies might be better off than others? I want to make dough. 90 hour weeks, no problem. Any days, any hours. Any advice?

Trial and error worked best for me. It's sometimes hard to find the right company through classifieds, yellow pages, and online. The best thing to do is go to the towns near where all of the drilling action is. Go sit at a truck stop and you'll see water trucks and sand trucks pulling in and stopping all day long. Talk to these guys and find out what the pay is like and what kind of hours they are getting. Turnover is high in the oil fields, mainly because of the long hours. People come to the fields looking for money, they work for several months, put 10,000 in their pocket, and leave. But if you have experience driving a truck, and a clean mvr, getting a job within a week of being in town isn't hard to do.
I currently haul sand in Pennsylvania. I took home 3,400 dollars in the last two weeks. It's long hours, 110 a week, and I'm out in the fields for 3 weeks at a time, but where else can a guy make that much money in 2 weeks.
I'm looking to go back to Colorado and haul water, I'm getting a little homesick for Colorado. -
If you can stand the long hours than go for it.
The turnover is high up there cause you work
12 to 14 hour shifts 7 days a week.
Most guys are all gung-ho when they first go
up there but burn out after a month or two.
Many aren't getting enough sleep and some
are getting sick from burning the candle at
both ends.
The money is great but you don't have a life.
I heard that Shell is working guys 4-on/3-off.
Don't know if that's true or not but sounds
like a much better gig fer sure.Last edited: Jun 13, 2011

My buddy ran for a water hauler in Towanda, PA it was 12 hour shifts 6am to 6pm and 6pm to 6am....guess which shift new guys get ??
They will flat run you ragged the money from what I've heard is usually from $18 to $20 an hour maybe more....I'm in the Binghamton area and they are begging for drivers just south of me (Towanda area) from what I hear the traffic is a mess down there also..rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
I looked into it.
The money is about $20 an hour like you said.
You get OT after 40 hours.
Most of these guys are getting in around 80+ hours
running seven days a week (~12 hrs. or more a day).
There is a slight differential for night work.
The only outfit I would consider up there is Shell Oil.
They run a 4-on/3-off schedule and will even put you
up in a local hotel during your work week.
As a lot of the guys live a good distance away from
the drill sites this isn't a bad option.
They also pay $30 a day per diem.
The rest of these outfits run you every day with no
lodging, per diem, and not much sleep.
I'll leave that gig for the die hards.groundpounder Thanks this. -
Let us know how you make out, good luck ! -
That would be a bit much.
I live near Scranton myself so I'm on the same boat.
If they put you up in a hotel and pay some per diem
it wouldn't be so bad.
I'm going to talk to the guy this week.
I'll keep ya posted. -
I heard alot about this water hauling thing but cant seem to find out who is actually paying o/o's $80 hr as the rumors run... Im down in Scranton but i have Uncle down VA wants to send a few trucks up here and dedicate. If I can get some solid contacts Ill be a happy man. Any news?
Rowdy -
I have not been able to verify it yet but the rumors kicking around here are the pay rate has dropped because of too many trucks and too many drivers.....hope thats not the case..

Like they all say its a rumor.
rabbiporkchop Thanks this.
