Will anyone down there hire me with a DUI i got in 2010? Im a former Marine and a motor transport operator at that with three combat tours. Do you think there is anyway my military background could make that DUI an oversight? I'm really tryin to get down there and make some money! My buddy is workin for IPS driving a rig and hes pullin in over a 100k a year!

You may as well forget trucking in general for 7 to 10 years really. Most companies wont even consider you with a DUI. And the ones that might........aren't worth working for really. Keep your nose clean for ten years and come again. If that isnt possible for you to do kiss your thoughts of comercial driving goodbye for good.

Marine, you don't have much of a chance. DUIs su-uh-uh-uck. It may not help you, but you can try this. GO to this site and register. You have to be smart about how you explain and describe your experience, and telling them about where you want to work. If you answer the questions right, (PM me if you can't figure it out) you will get about 3-8 listings a day.

If you're serious about this job search, you'll call most of them (the oilfield companies) and tell them about your military experience first, then tell them about the DUI. ONE of them might tell you to show up in Texas and they'll talk to you.

You could also try talking to a Schneider recruiter, and tell them you're a military vet with transport experience. Then tell them about the DUI. If they don't say good bye, (and I think they will) you have a chance, and the VA will pay you an extra grand a month. Their reaction will tell you what many if not most other major companies will tell you. I think Halliburton has the same kind of npo DUI policy....but as ex-military, it's at least worth checking with them.


In short, don't ask here. Ask THEM.

Yeah that didn't answer my question though. Will anyone hire me with a recent DUI? Im trying to see if its worth the money I'm gonna spend on getting schooled for my CDL. If I put myself through that and get my Class A and no one hires me because of my DUI that would be a HUGE waste of money! Any thoughts?

That conviction will cost you many years of commercial driving.

HOWEVER, if you are willing to earn back your driving reputation in the eyes of trucking companies, I suggest you get a swamper position with a larger well servicing company. Swampers are helpers that ride with drivers to help do the driver's job outside of the truck. Get in good with a company doing this for two years and I would bet they would give you a shot at driving.

I don't know about other areas, but swampers make $15/hr+OT in ND. Upwards of 70 hours per week. Not bad for learning the driver's job.

Insurance companies tell trucking companies who they can hire to drive. Right now, it's not you. If they hire an uninsurable driver and something happens then it's their ###. But you should be asking trucking companies how long a DUI matters to their insurance. THAT is the answer to your question of WHEN you can expect to drive, and that is the date you should be working for as a swamper.

Get your CDL and endorsements now to build time up and get you in the door as a swamper. How long you have had your Hazmat matters to some companies' insurance, and how long you have had your CDL matters to all of them.

I had to take a load of crude over to a site around Falls City, TX last night and passed through Kenedy TX. Saw several banners hanging in front of yards looking to hire CDL drivers. I could not remember them all but I did remember this one, Basic Energy.
