Thought this thread had died, about 5 weeks ago I got a call from a mail contractor I know and am back to hauling US Mail. $23.53 an hour route pays 8.5 hours but you can run it in an easy 8 hours. Same 300 mile round trip run every night. Late slip if you leave the dock over ten minutes late, run on holidays but double pay. Home every night. By far the best driving job I've ever had.

I am not working for Salmon Brothers who haul mail nation wide but a smaller contractor. The USPS does not want a lot of driver turn-over so they specify in the contract to the contractors the hourly pay rate.

I can't speak for the chicken hauling but I did haul live turkeys for a while, most of the poultry companies around here are starting to contract out live hauling. JUST MY EXPERIENCE but to make that kind of money weekly doing what I was doing your looking at 12 to 16 hour days (most live haulers get an agriculture exemption from hours of service,)). Most pay on a per load/mileage, no overtime and I worked lots of nights when you will spend a lot of time sitting to get a $36.00 load, then driving bad roads for 30 cents a mile. If someone tells me their drivers are averaging 861 weekly hauling poultry my next question would be how many hours a week are they putting in to do so. I'm betting a lot of very long days. My personal record was 21 hours straight and I probably made (grossed) about 250 dollars for the 21 hours. I know lots of nights live hauling I took home well under $10.00 per hour. Why I am a former live hauler.

I know this is an oil field forum but thought some might like to know..
