I decided months ago that I was going to get into the oil/gas field. After lots of research I decided to try to get on with Schlumberger through SOS now Elwood staffing. I have now been offered the job and have a few questions. Also, if anyone is a Frac or Cement guy with one of the big companies, any tips or tricks would be welcome.
What is the first two weeks of training like? Classroom? In the field?
What is the best winter clothes to wear under your coveralls?
Will slip on steel toed boots work or do I need lace up?
What are the best prescription safety glasses?
It seems like they have two scheduled rotations a 8/4 and a 16/6, which is Frac and which is Cement?
Frac or Cement which one should I try to go to?
Would studying up on anything help me start off easier?
How do you move up/advance at Schlumberger? I heard at Haliburton you take tests to move up.
I live 350 miles from the yard. Do I really have to relocate or can I just get a hotel locally when the shift finish's at the yard?
How does getting called in on your days off work?
How many hours a day should I expect? 12, 15, 18, or more?
When do you actually do your CDL training? Does your position change after your receive your CDL?
When do you actually get offered a permanent job through Schlumberger? 6 months?
Thanks for answering any of my newb questions. I just want to be the best prepared guy in training.

Your first couple weeks will be in a class room. Winter gear depends on were your working and so do some other questions like relocation and how long it will take to go company. I only wear slip on I won't wear lace ups. You should expect 15-18 hrs per day and take a backpack with things to entertain you and snacks. Watch some YouTube videos, it will help you understand what's going on out there.

Good points all. However, having been in Midland for a very short period I might entertain this; Go with the cement crew. The frac crews I know of "get to do maintence" when they come is off location. You don' want to be swinging sledges undoing hoses, couplers, etc to replace packings, seals, & god knows what else before your days off. Some locations, they even load your trailer.
Don't think of this as a driving job. You will be part of a crew, and work as such, as far as I can see. Driving is prolly only 30-40% of the deal, if that. Cement is better....you gotta go get more powder.
Motels, RV's, ANYWHERE to live in Midland/Odessa is beyond belief. $850 for an old FEMA trailer. I was happy to pay that. Buy a trailer, old motorhome and bring it with, if you can. Mebee roommate.
Yep...kiler hours. Days...but you have "line 5" on logs....and all Schlumberger trucks have their own proprietary e-log set-up. You'll have a sleeper, but not a condo.
You can however, make some great bucks, if you & the family can deal with the hours.
Good luck
P.S. Oh...if you haven't done a drive test yet...practice "double clutching" for your drive test. Don't know about now...but they used to have a driver trainer who HAS failed folks on this "skill"..??!!!! I dunno. -

A buddy of mine from the San Antonio yard said the cement guys usually take a month to make company benefits. For frac it's 6 months..I was called for a cementing interview and was offered 17.50 hr 4on2off...for cement..good luck....I have a cdl though

I also looked at the Elwood site. The only cement job I saw was in Alice Tx. It said 3 years experience with a year oilfield. I will be headed to Texas this Saturday. We will be staying in San Angelo and going to different areas to apply. I drove long ago but I have a new CDL A with x endorsement.
I searched again under" operator" and found listings in Texas. I just had to try different search terms!Last edited: Mar 17, 2014
