I really wish the postings about how newbs can get a job so easy out here would stop!! 80% wont last a month. that is my biggest fear is some one with six months or less driving exp. coming out here working 70 to 100 hours a week falling asleep behind the wheel!! I see to many newbie mistakes on lease roads and on rigs that just has my head shaking everyday!! every company imo should have a 1.5 to 2 year driving exp before hiring.all people see is what they think is easy money and a lot of it is not!!

...except that statistics highlight the fact that it is experienced truckers (1+ years of driving experience) who are more likely to fall asleep behind the wheel, in part because they are used to what they're doing and can get bored and complacent behind the wheel.

Overall I get what you're saying, but newbies need to start somewhere too and if they can get good-paying jobs in the oilfields to start out with instead of having to suffer through a couple of years with garbage OTR carriers who treat their drivers as expendable, then more power to them.

The responsibility is on the individuals to stay safe and keep themselves and other drivers out of harm's way and that doesn't mean they shouldn't have a place with all of the opportunity in the oilfields.

Falling asleep behind the wheel aint a matter of new or old... As Driver5 said complacency and overconfidence will come bite your right in the rear every time.
Besides whats easier: driving at night on lease roads and country highways or day light in traffic jams and motorways, city traffic etc..
Its more forgiving for a new driver. Like you miss a gear or two at 0200am nobody is around. Do that in city traffic and you ll more than likely end up rear ended.

The money ain't easy anyway you got to work for it and make sacrifice (sleep is not one of those). People expecting easy money are fools.

Something is definitely up in west Texas. Every time I drop at Lyondell I hear about another group of drivers heading out there because its so in demand.

That's funny because at the company I work for it's the guys with lots of experience who have the most accidents. How about someone who has been trucking for over a decade rolling a tanker? Yep, seen that.

I've been doing a lot of Apache wells around Garden City lately and making real good money. As far as newbies go, I think they should go OTR for at least a year first. That will weed out a lot drivers who shouldn't be behind the wheel. The oil fields are NO PLACE for rookies!

It is one thing to have an accident in this business after doing it for 10 years, that is a result of complacency, drivers getting too comfortable in what they are doing.

However new drivers are much more likely to wreck and have issues due to inexperience, why? Because you don't know anything yet.

most of us will experience an accident of some form or another in this business if you make a career out of it, it is just a matter of time. How severe that wreck is going to be depends largely on who was at fault and how stupid they were being in order to cause said wreck. That is just the way it is.
