I drive to and from Big Spring to Garden City each day. So far it has been a good drive. The problem for me, both in my 4-wheeler and in the 18-wheeler are what I call the "pickup cowboys". These fools take incredible chances, darting in and out constantly, driving their pickups like a Porsche. They are what scare me. I for one will not try to stop, I'll just hit them if they are that determined to get somewhere 15 seconds faster by pulling out in front of me. I've had 3 close calls, all pickup trucks.

I agree. My wife is with me and will soon be driving in the oilfields as well. I would not do this if she were not here with me. I'm old, was fat, but won't be much longer with this job! I work with a man who is 69 and he does a great job. But he and I agree - save the overtime for the youngsters.

True, I have seen the construction of it in progress. Can't wait, we need it.

That is all of Texas unfortunately. Seems something about large pickup trucks attracts the worst types of people.

Thanks for the detailed post cooley!
I really appreciate the fact that you detailed the citys to look at, I was also wondering if you have any information about specific companies that are hiring drivers with limited experience, or if there is any driver staffing agency's that you know of?

You probably mean well, but give me a break. I came out here two years ago with a brand new CDL and absolutely no blue collar work experience. I didn't know a hammer union from a cam lock, but I was trained to work safely by a good company. This isn't rocket science. Idiots don't last long out here, but if you have a good head on your shoulders and are willing to learn, anybody can do this. The biggest challenge for me has been the long hours day after day.

I'd spend less time worrying about newbies wrecking and more time worrying about these small companies that don't use logs and could care less about fatigue and HOS. That's where the real danger is.

I think you are more the exception than the rule. I do a lot of training and it has made me a little bitter. Didn't mean to offend.

Ah yes...The Fast and the Furious redneck style. I have heard that the bigger the lift, the bigger the penile extension. Could be wrong though as I'm into cars...

I've been reading post from all of you guys for weeks now and I'm constantly impressed by the amount of knowledge and respect most here share. I'm currently enrolled in trucking school in East Texas and I'm nearly finished. We have had many recruiters come in with their OTR driving job pitches and they preach how good it will be to drive 7 days a week for .33 cents per hour. I'm sure some people can live off that, I however can't justify those wages for the time spent driving down the highway. I'm 44 years old, have a great driving record which means I've either been lucky or I really do pay attention to what I'm doing. While driving this new monsterous beast in class I've amassed a great respect for the damage I could cause or that could be caused to me while driving. Which I think has made me an even better driver. I too plan on becoming a rookie oil field driver and have and have no intention of ever going OTR. I've talked to several people that tell me I need to go earn my chops before even thinking of the oilfield, but the way I see it is ....why would I waste some companies money and time hiring me, and training me to only stay there for a year? If I'm hired and trained in the oilfield, I will stick it out. Teach me to do my job and I will listen. I already have the self preservation down pat. I don't wanna die or hurt anyone else, so of course I'll listen and be safe. That said. I could really use a couple leads to good companies in either south or west texas. Thank you for listening

Gitaslife, many of us said screw OTR and went directly into the oilfield and guess what? We have no accidents, spills, and we set a great example for others. I say all drivers should tell a recruiter with a .33/mile offer to f off and instead get over to the oilfield ASAP. Plenty of work for all and if OTR really needs work done then they can pay a fair wage.

I suspect some may not want rookies in the oilfield because they feel this may put pressure on their jobs and pay. To that I say everyone deserves a fair shot. Running down the interstate for 10 hours straight will not prepare a driver to work in the oilfield. So pay attention in class and pay attention when you go to work in the oilfield. Learn all you can and RESPECT those around you who have been in trucking for a long time but DO NOT let anyone put you down or make you feel inferior for wanting to do the best job and make better money than OTR!
