    Update...

Both Suncoast and Sunoco are not able to train me right now. Still awaiting on the word from the OK offices for Sunoco. They both said that the hiring managers are so short staffed, they dont have the resources to train me from scratch. They currently need some drive time experience.
No big deal, I am persistent...time to go after my second choice...VAC TRUCK

I have put in apps for Nabors, Key, Basic and many other smaller outfits here locally.

Made a contact HIGH up in Key delivering pizza this past week. He got me in touch with his HR people. That was a huge plus. The recruiters where kinda of stunned I had that referral. Could very well be my in.

Found Nabors' office and completed the app there on their computer and did all the others while online.

BTY... Midland Centennial Library is a really cool Library!

Today is my first day off from delivering pizza since arriving here in Midland. In 12 days I worked over 121 hours and made some serious bank...thanks be to God.

Enjoying that fringe benefit of free pizza as usual. :biggrin_25525:

PS...I like it here in Midland

    sanook and Driver5 Thank this.

Okay, so lets say there is a guy where I work who busts butt. He told me he averages $24 an hour delivering pizza. He tells me that the majority of that is cash.

I would tell this guy to keep delivering pizza and be happy. He's likely making more doing that than he'll ever see in a broken down, worn out oilfield truck.... seriously.

Edit: Just a question... is that $24/hr driving a company supplied vehicle with company provided fuel? That is a HUGE difference.

    These are things to consider.

Pizza delivery does have a cost.
Wear and tear...I put over 30K miles on my car in 5 months
I burn through $15-$20 in gas on a 10 hour shift.

It is also very intense physical work if you move the numbers of pizza I see moved.

The other day I delivered 40 deliveries with 55 pizzas in 11 hours.

I usually take over 30 runs every shift.

    I imagine I walk/run a good 3-5 miles every shift easy.

Will there be work in the oil? Yes.
Will I have paid holiday? With some companies Yes.
    Vacation Pay? Yes.

I can even get into a man camp and cut out over 6K in expense a year.

PLUS with the CDL experience I have more options for work worldwide.

Yes...given that info....you would be better off in the oilfield. That's why I asked. Once you take out the numbers for vehicle expenses, it's no longer $24/hr. It is still a heck of a gig to get you through though. You'll get something soon enough.

Funny though, I showed up at work yesterday.

Turns out, the company who I work for is wanting to expand.

My General Manager wants to recommend me to take over his store when he gets promoted.

So, going straight from driver to General Manager of the highest grossing company store in the State could actually be better than driving a truck.

One issue though, I dont like the way management within the pizza biz works....really cut throat sometimes. Managers usually roll off the mistakes to their underlings. dont want to get burned.

Plus, general management here is a pain due to the lack of good workers...

I told him I will let his boss give me an offer.

So far I know that the GM where I am at made six figures last year.

As long as the boom continues, so will the store.

I would almost rather start a career with my CDL because down the road I could always just start my own transport company.

Today I have been running down yard managers for Nabors, District manager for Key and still am trying to get on the phone with Basic. They all got my app, Resume and cover letter....

Something should be breaking by next week.

No doubt your future is looking brighter. I dont know anything about the manager position...so cant advise or comment...just remember... the driving jobs will be there and you will always be able to get one. If for some reason, those jobs are not there in the future...well, then they werent worth committing to anyway.

    Thanks Arky...

Just had an interview with Key.

Dont think I will be given the position.

Could be that I am too ambitious. I was not very impressed anyhow.

$17.50 per hour running Vac Truck. 60-70 hours a week all within DOT regs.

    4 on 2 off.

That $17.50 does not change even after a year. No housing, No Diem, running within a 50 mile radius.

Would not mind taking it just to get the experience, but with my resume and experience I doubt the district manager will give me the position. He told me that he did not want me leaving for a better paying company after I get experience. Funny huh? I asked him, "Well why would I do that...dont you guys have a competitive wage?" He said yes, but then admitted that some companies do pay $20 an hour and do allow 80-100 hours a week so all that 'competitive' nonsense does not convince me.

I got my app submitted to Nabors. From what I understand they do have pay increases and offer housing. following up with the hiring managers for the yards around here.

Pulled 71 hours delivering pizza last week in 6 days of driving and took over 220 deliveries.
Shoot...I make more money delivering pizza than I would at Key.

I guess my resourcefulness and ambition come with its downsides too.

    Anyway,
The job fair is next week on the 26th.

    Driver5 Thanks this.

Yeah... don't let stuff like that effect you in any way. You have the catbird's seat. You have an income and place to live while you wait it out. When you find the company that is REALLY needing drivers...all the garbage goes out the window immediately... they just need drivers.

I know a guy :) who just got a call from a company that he had no business whatsoever contacting. They want SEVERAL years experience. But, they need drivers.... and since he has a few months of crude experience, the rules are getting bent....per the owner of the company. He did not tell me the name of the company though :)
