@chalupa - will any of these hire newbies? Or is that a better possibility in Midland/Odessa area?

    Thx!!!

Houston is the 4th largest city in the US. Midland is not even in the top 100.

    Well,

There are less oil jobs in Houston(field jobs that is.. tons of corporate oil positions) than W Texas.

    And there are more people.

So there is more competition which means they can be more selective in who they choose.

No one wants to live in W Texas(yes I know SOME people do) so they can not be as selective.

I just made a move from Western OK to Houston and so far I am pleased with my decision. I am very loyal and hate to jump from job to job but my former company made my move out of Western OK a no brainier. They cut everyone's % pay to 21-23%, I was at 27%, (so basically anyone who had been with them for 1-2 years was expected to work at the same rate of a newbie hire). They cut the housing per diem to zero from $500/month and we had no other benefits. We worked for 1.5 years with a promise of insurance and when they finally broke down and offered it to drivers almost 2 years later, they cut the pay and took away the housing money so not really a gain in benefits. I could have stayed and had the opportunity to work harder for less money and crappy insurance I didn't need since I purchased my own Blue Cross coverage years ago, but to me the writing was on the wall and forced me to make a move.

That said Houston has been a blast. Where I work now I am not rushed, I am paid by the hour and I have great benefits. I live on the water and don't work as many hours as I use to so I have some new hobbies like kayaking and a greatly improved lifestyle. Yes I expect to make less money than I did last year but I'm still young so plenty of time to work work work, I also want to enjoy my life not just live it.

Anyway, from what I can tell there are plenty of crude hauling jobs in the Houston area. If you are just coming out of CDL school I do not see it happening for you here as the larger population makes more drivers available so the companies can be more selective. But if you have 1 year of Class A experience and 6 months crude hauling you can land a crude hauling gig here.

Totally irrelevant. Size of town has little to do with your ability to sell yourself to prospective employer. Your education, experience, self confidence, certifications, driving record, communication skills etc are what get you hired or not. People get hired in dung holes like Detroit everyday. Much easier in healthy area like Houston/Midland/ nearly all of the South/Southwest.
