Ok, here it goes. I've been looking on this site for awhile reading all the great info on the ND oil boom jobs, and just want to say thanks to everybody for sharing. I've been with FedEx express for 20 years and am thinking about giving my 2 weeks notice to go out and work in ND pulling oil or whatever. Prairie field services called me yesterday and it seems they want me out there to start quickly. I was just wondering if anybody here has dealt with them or heard of them. They seem pretty legit and offer free housing, starting pay being 25 dollars an hour and average 70 hours a week. I don't have a prob working my ### off for a good living but don't want to make a mistake. I would appreciate comments or insight, good or bad. Tough decision. Thanks

There are many companies out there to work for. Sounds like you are giving up a good job. Can you go spend a week or two put there to see if you like the area? Driving the oil patch is very different. Plus, when do you get to see family?

Hey Murphy, sorry so long to respond. I recently turned down the position with prairie. They were gonna offer free housing, 14 hour days 6 days a week. work 6 to 8 weeks on 2 week off rotation. It was gonna be around 90k a year BUT, I turned it down due to heath care for my family would of been about 1k a month and of course the plane ticket to fly home every 6 weeks was right around a 1k too. But the main reason was being away from the family and the harsh conditions that you drive in. about 99% off road. So yes I will keep my somewhat good job for now:)

Sounds like a pretty good gig for those not tied down. Did they happen to tell you what experience levels they were willing to hire?

That was the exact conclusion I came to as well. If a guy was single it would be great because of the free housing the offer. They really didn't relay experience to me but they did ask me if I had experience chaining up and driving in bad weather. On the app tho I believe they asked for at least 2 years experience tho. They also have a 6 to 9 day training period if you were to go out there for the job which I thought was good. Only pays half the starting rate tho, which is 25 dollars an hour.

    Wild Murphy Thanks this.

Well at least you made the decision before you got out there and realized it wasn't for you. A Lot of guys come to the patch thinking it's all sunshine , rainbows and $$. Then they see what they gotta do for the money and pack it up and head'er out as quick as they came in.

Wild Murphy and Cherrysoda Thank this.

I worked for them they fire 95% of people before 90 days. Stick with Fed-Ex. Much better. Prairie is mainly to train people for the oilfield. Not long term. Everyone I know that worked there less than 90 days. Except 1 person. They sent a letter to his house, when he was recovering from surgery. But it was for his health. So he will have a multi million dollar lawsuit out on them. And the rest of the ones less than 90 days. Will hopefully be a Class Action Lawsuit by Spring. At least 15-20 Million dollar Lawsuit. Because they new before hiring any of us on, it was going to be short term. Pre meditated firing is Wrongful Termination
