What's wrong with vac pumps? Have your say in a new pump design!

    Hi guys,

I’m a mechanical engineer, working for a company on the design of a vacuum pump for use in water hauling from frac sites. As a part of this process I’d really like to get input from operators with experience using vac pumps in water hauling.

I’m looking for any thoughts you have on how the pumps operate, their layout or functions, ways that your job could be made easier, and problems that you experience with the current pumps. I’d also be very interested to know what your thoughts are about trailer-mounted pumps.

I have put together a sort of list of questions below that would help me in designing a pump that’s better for truck operators, answers to any of them or just any of your general thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    • What pump and configuration do you normally use? What pump and configuration do you prefer, and why? (e.g. a Fruitland on a vertical trailer mount, or a NVE on a horizontal trailer mount, etc)

    • What are the most common problems you have with pumps on the job?

    • What changes to the function, layout or operation of the pump would make your job easier?

    • Are there tools you use on site that it would be useful to have supplied with the pump? (maybe things like vac/pressure gauge, infrared thermometer, alignment tools, repair manuals)

Any additional feedback, thoughts or ideas would be awesome too!

    Kind Regards

First problem is operating the PTO. If you can link and automated or automatic gearbox with the pto operation, you are adding less time and more safety, and more life for the equipment. Like being in neutral, with parking brake on before pto engagement. And pto disengaged before being able to put the truck in gear. Also, clear indications on the pump. Not having an assigned truck gives you different pumps. Just let me know if you are sucking or spitting LOL. And also, oil level. Almost every evening (night driver) was completing the oil level at those pumps. No self lubricating pumps? or automated lubricating system with a reservoir with a warning light inside the cabin?
And having a remote control with the pump will be great! Plip! pump off. plip! pump on! yeah!!!! with some link between the engine, pto and pump, you can make the operation of a vacuum truck even easier. Also think about pump trucks. Those guys are working with some serious pressure. Maybe your electronic control can be used in their trucks?
And you are an engineer, so can you give us a silent pump? thank you
Now go get 10 gallons of coffee and CAD all day and night.

I personally like a high mount with a belt or hydraulic drive. Nice and quiet, unlike those side mounts. The side mount will grenade parts all over and they overheat and are loud. Most companies rig up the cheapest crap they can buy(side mounts). A nubee isnt gonna know any better sitting in his cab inhaling H2s because the exhaust of the Vac pump is just exiting into the cab.

Forget those trailer mounts. You ever get sent to a pulling unit down a dirtbike trail and youll see why. Tree branches will end that trip. There is already many sweet set ups being offered. Only the small mom and pop local companies would be interested in a nice set up. Share holders of the majors want money in their pockets.

JAL1972: Most of the PTO operation is outside of my ability to control, but I can pass on the feedback. Oil gauging and pump flow marking are definitely things I can work on though.

What brand of pumps is it you've noticed the oil issues with? Do you find that the reservoir is too small and constantly needs refilling, or that they just consume a lot of oil? I'll work on the idea of an in-truck gauge for the oil, I agree that would be great.

I'm already working on a remote control, but the silent pump bit may require a few hours more CAD and breaking a couple laws of physics..

Jon_n_West_TX great feedback, will keep the exhaust position in mind. Have you ever used a tray mount on the side of the trailer? It's protected from trees/debris that way. Do you still prefer the truck mount over this config? Why?

The exhaust would not be an issue if the vent line was rigged up as it is supposed to. I only saw that done once though.

The noise is the worst thing for me. Sounds like a thousand dying buffalo on repeat or something.

    JAL1972 Thanks this.

A muffler? a supressor? and you are the one who needs to worry about physics. I heard a truck can stop earlier than a car because has bigger tires and brakes...and the headlights are brighter because they have bigger bulbs...
I'm immune to any law of physics. That's why I'm a trucker at the oilfields.

The muffler would eventually clog up with dirt. So it would have to be able to be torn aparr and cleaned easily. But then again I know some extremely lazy drivers out here

Why you are lying? e v e r y single trucker does the pre-trip in a conscious manner. There's no such thing as a lazy driver. No. Nope. Denial.
gonna turn off my sarcasmtron, its overheating.
