Im leaving California and heading to Texas next week. I have a road test in Odessa for a company that pays 25% to haul sand. However, Im eligible to work for a different company in Odessa hauling water for $16 per hour. Although Im just trying to get my foot in the door I'd like to make the right choice.

If it was up to you, would you take the job that pays a percentage or the job that pays hourly?

    Thanks!

Depends if you can get unloaded with sand. Some guys have told me they've sat for 3 days on one load

I was with Arnold hauling sand in so. Texas for five days. Paid by the load. Sat around for four days waiting to get trained, on the fifth day we ran one load of sand in a 21 hour day.

I'm with Stevens tanker now, getting trained to haul water, paid hourly and not expected nor allowed (Arnold wanted me to) to drive after being on duty for 15 hrs. In my experience the hourly seems to be better. Hope you find whatever works for you.

I used to work in the San Ardo, CA oil fields. Pay was 18 bucks an hour as a vac truck driver but I'd only work 8 hour days. I would kill wells for unit crews and help them replace stuffing boxes. The real money was working with the drilling rig but those jobs were limited. My goal is to save up and get my own truck so im trying to make as much money as I can within the shortest time possible. I currently work for a company hauling cement but it doesn't pay. Im talking about 26K per year. Thats why I want to give Texas a try. Plus, I heard owner operators are killing it out there. Might just be my new home.

What do you want to end up doing? Sand. Oil?

I enjoy pulling pneumatics but honestly whatever makes more money is what I want to do. Like I said, my goal is to buy a truck so that I can be an owner operator in Texas.

It looks like we're headed for a bit of a plateau for the moment...tanks are filling faster than the pipelines can send/process. That surplus will no doubt drive the price down and everything will slow...how much/how long? Who knows...maybe not even noticeable....but something to think about at the moment.

As for the question at hand....it depends on the percentage and the hourly! Straight clock or ticket time?

Without that info you're asking us which tastes better, this or that? Hint...we don't know what this or that are!
