UncleGoose, I have no cdl nor experience but am strongly interested in the driving business especially for the oil industry. Would you be kind enough recommend any companies in Texas that will train? I Thank you.

If you want to drive, you need a CDL. You can go to school or rent a truck, pass the test, etc. Most companies require either schooling or experience, or both.

If you want to frac, you can get a job, and if they like you you'll be sent to cdl school. But those jobs you drive maybe once or twice a week and sling iron the rest of the time. If you're young that's the way to go. You could retire in ten years if you play it right.

Experience depends upon which section of the oil companies/fields you are going to be working in. For instance, we hire newbie drivers, all the way up to 'old-timers' with decades of experience. It really depends on the job and the area. We need people for hotshotting, water tankers, crude oil tankers, dirt/sand/gravel in both OK and ND. The difference is going to be in what certifications you hold. If you hold air brakes, tanker, and hazmat - then you will rule the roost - even without experience because you will be able to roll the rig with whatever load is attached to it. If you just have basic Class A, then you are going to have downtime until a load comes in that you can haul. There is always a job for you in one of the many sections of the oil field, regardless of cert and experience, it just depends on how high up the food chain you want to be.
