I am going to take my career to the next level by getting my CDL-A, and I've all but decided that instead of going to a company sponsored training and driving OTR, that I would rather train for my CDL at a local community college and then find a job on the basin in Texas/Oklahoma/New Mexico.
I am concerned about the short period of time between acquiring my CDL and being settled into my new area and bringing in pay checks.
I won't have the cash available to go down to Texas in person to apply for jobs or to pay for wherever I will sleep until I start bringing pay checks in.
Will I be able to find, apply, interview and get hired for a job from here in Michigan? Will I be able to find a company that will provide housing by taking deductions from my paychecks and without money up front until I am able to afford my own place? More importantly, will I be able to find both of those things as a fresh CDL-A holder? (18 months of experience as a Fedex route driver with no tickets or accidents, if that is worth anything)
If anyone had any other tips or advice for how I should go about this career change, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks.
Getting started on the basin as a recent CDL grad with limited funds

I'm in Livonia. Planning on going to Trainco in Taylor for the CDL training unless I find a better plan.

save the cash and don't go to school. now you have cash to get the job in Texas.

I went to Trainco in Lansing. Good school, people are really nice. They can pretty much guarantee you a job out of school and will work hard to get you one. Are you looking to do otr or stay local at first? Do you want to do fb, van, tanker, etc....?

you need to plan on at a minimum 2 weeks but more than likely closer to a month before money starts coming in even AFTER you get hired.

What are you planning on doing there though? Hauling pipe, water, crude? All that determines what you do for training. I know most places wont hire a fresh graduate for hazmat or tanker hauling. I can tell you of a good place to get fb training to get your feet wet and get some otr experience. The hardest thing I can see is lack of experience getting down there.
