I wasn't really looking, but after being in the shop for the 12th time since April with my current OTR company, I started to look around. I have offers from 2 different companies hauling sand. Both claim that the job would be drop and hook. Delivering from the Cleburne Texas area to south of San Antonio, drop the full trailer hook and empty back to Cleburne. Repeating 5 days a week. One's offering aprox $200 a trip the other is closer $250 a trip.

One Company is Chalk Mountain and the other is CAB Logistics. I guess my question, is that I have read a bit on hauling and delivering sand, not just drop and hook runs, so the question is are these legit type jobs in the field?

    thanks,

    teq.

Lol,that's funny. Somebody from chalk mountain called me
this morning saying the same thing. I never heard of drop
and hook on frac sand. I guess we will both find out if it's true.

ill have to hear this from somebody in the field to believe it.

I've seen both companies here in San Antonio, both with nice equipment. ..they probably just want u to drop the trailer at the cleburne yard so that someone else can take it out to location..

Could very well be. Our company has 6 trucks running Cleburn to Von Ormy 6 days a week, except our guys unload. Cab runs elogs I believe, so the d/h would save the driver the 1.5hr unload time per trip. Same with Chalk Mountain. ...and the sand may be going to their Elmendorf facility.

These runs are to supply the Eagle Ford area with enough sand. Trains are clogging up north in Chicago, and sand loading facilities where there are traditionally 20-30 or more rail cars there may now be 5-10, if that many. We've been running to all sorts of loading points we usually never go to. Sand is becoming real scarce in some places.

Chauk Mountain does do drop and hook. Used to be from Glen Rose/Cleburne to San Angelo area. 100 mesh for the most part.
CAB is also legit. Pretty good size company. Not heard a lot of bad about them. Traditional sand bunch. Driver load/unload. Sand money is OK but don't plan on a lot of the $2500-4000 company driver weeks that used to be the norm. Too many rats fighting each other. Lots of short hauls that don't pay squat. Make sure about detention pay. Lot now will want you to sit for 24 hour a day loaded while well is down and pay you for 8. Don't fall for that. Not unusual for frac sand to sit 1-5 days while coiled tubing or others come in and do repairs. Others will call it storage and charge less=at your expense.

What's the money trail with Sand ?
Driver for Owner operator : 25% of load plus wait time
? What is the 25% based off of ?
What's the actual amount that the company with the contract makes? Example :
xyz company gets paid $ amount A by haliburton
xyz company pays joe owner $ amount
joe owner pays drivers .25% of what
My question is what is amount A and Amount B?
    what is the 25% of
what does a haliburton pay to xyz company for wait time?

thanks for any help with this

If you're an O/O getting 80% of gross, the gross is what my company is paid by the pumping company (and i have seen invoices)...in my case a minimum is $800, so i get $640. If i employed a driver he would make 25% of $640...$160. A minimum is up to 100 miles from loadout to location. Do 2/day for a 7 day period.. grosses $8, 960, driver makes $2, 240, or 25% of what the truck grosses.

The pumping company is hired by the oil company that owns the lease on the well, the pumping company hires their subs..water, chemical, sand trucks, if they don't have their own...which some do. Some sand guys are trying to get direct contracts with the oil companies, cutting out the pumpers markup on the sand, which I've been told is substantial. Stay tuned.

allright, sorry it's been so long since i originally posted this.

ended up going with CAB. $250 round trip, to run from Nemo/Cleburn loaded to drop/hook mt in Von Ormy yard then head back. Rinse and repeat the next day. Wait time pay a'int great at the sand plant, $15 an hour, but at the same time so far, there's not been too much of that and getting paid to sleep really ain't that bad of a gig. Esp since i'm now home every night.

Went with CAB mainly because i could not get Chalk Mountian to return a phone call. Worked out though, guys that were doing the drop and hook runs for Chalk are now delivering to pad sights, for the same rate they were getting for the drop and hook gig. ($16.50 i think.)

For this gig CAB is running 2013-15 Volvo sleepers set @ 70. All with fridges, some with apu's some not, but idling is not an issue. (drivers that deliver to the wells are in 2013-15 Pete's.) Schedule is 4 on 2 off, but working xtra days isn't a problem.

Am i getting rich? eh, doing allright. Made the change to be home and it's working so far.
