cwill187, are you ready for the culture shock, of the oilfields?

Do your research also on which oilfield, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas; west or southwest region.

Why north dakota? You could reach your goals by working in texas. Low cost and if you work for a company that pays hotel and meals you will be fine.

I currently frac. Hotel is 5 min from the yard and they feed you while at jobsite. I am about to go on days off. While on my hitch I have spend like 50 bucks!!! And that's because I had to buy a jacket cause it was cold a week ago and I didn't bring one lol

I agree with what these guys are saying. If you haven't done your research...I suggest you do it before committing to anything. There are lots of options out here that don't involve -60 windchill temps. There are options such that will help eliminate the housing costs. There are several different geographic areas as well... including areas just to the west/southwest of you in PA/OH. Always keep an open mind when researching. You can narrow it down later. How much you make is not always the determining factor.. it's how much you can keep after all of the associated expenses...that is what counts.

From what I've read on here ND and TX are the best paying oilfields. Comparing those two, Texas pays slightly less hourly, but the big difference is you don't get as many hours of OT as you do in ND. And it seems harder to break into in Texas. Just going by what I've read from several people on here.

I should be able to find a room in Williston for what 900 a month or so? I could share with someone if I'm not saving enough, I just need somewhere to sleep.

Also, I'm not worried about distance from home, I've spent a few years living in other countries so I'm used to being away. I think ND offers the best opportunity to save up the most money possible, so that's why I think that's best.

I always take a look at Craigslist to see what rentals are going for in a particular area. Here is a sample of what I found http://nd.craigslist.org/apa/4683869335.html

Rentals in the Williston area appear to run in the $1200-$1400/mo range per bedroom....on CL. There may be better options available, but you would likely have to be there to find them.

If student loans are only thing holding you to debt you may be able to do it, but it depends how much you owe. If you owe a outrageous amount then you may need to extend your timeframe a bit.

Also you may need to look high and lo for a job with housing. This will help you save tremendously. Even if you accept a little less pay it may help you with goals. I use to make low wages long time ago but had free room and board and saved everything I made. Being in place with not much to do can also help, I also did this. If unable to find housing rent a room, do not rent your own place. And whatever you do, stay OUT of the bars, lol

I agree with finding a job with supplied housing. There is more to it than just the housing costs. People tend to move around a lot in the oilfield. Companies tend to move around a lot in the oilfield. If you sign your name to a rental contract, you'll be expected to fulfill that contract and they don't care if you lost your job or found a better one in another town etc. If your in company housing, you can just move. That is one reason that I liked working out of a sleeper truck so much.... NO commitments.

Yeah, that is the plan. I definitely don't want my own place, too much $$ and commitment. I will find a spare room in somebody elses place or better yet a job that provides housing.

Maybe it was just a person or two that said that and I took their word for it. You tell me. Do people usually work 85+ hours/week in the Texas oilfields?
