I've been hauling crude oil for 3 years, first two years no problems and all of a sudden this year I've had 2 spills, one 5 gallons the other 10. Our company has had a really bad 3-4 month stretch and they made it clear they were going to make an example out of the next incident. The spill was my fault, plain and simple, I can't blame anyone else for it. That being said, I still have a mortgage and bills to pay and I need to find a job pronto. I have a good relationship with my boss and he will give me a good recommendation, but I know that spills are a serious black mark. Neither of these spills were big, both well under a barrel and I have no tickets or accidents in 12 years driving a truck. Will crude oil haulers still hire you with a small spill on your record? I know some will, the guy I slide seats with spilled an entire load a few years ago and our company hired him back this spring. I haven't been fired from a job in 25 years, this is really just killing me. I just bought a house last year and now I'm looking at whether I have to sell the house and move on, work out of state and keep the house, move back to my neck of the woods and return to a more normal job? I'm single and can work in the higher pay more isolated oil fields if I have to if that is even an option. Trying to figure this out.
Just spilled 10 gallons of crude and was fired, can I still find a job hauling crude?

Yup, I wouldn't worry much.

Don't sweat it, people still have jobs here in ND after laying a truck over, so oil spills is not a huge issue. Just be upfront with next employer during the next interview, say what exactly happened.

be up front and honest with the new company... less than a barrel spill, many will hire you.

The only driveers whom have not spilled, do not drive tankers, should not be a big deal. They legally cannot discuss it anyway.

Dont worry about it, I hear about more small spills every day. They all still have jobs here, along with wore out shovels.
RockinChair and Chibob Thank this. -
costs are associated with spills. so, what seems harsh to us, isn't taken lightly with the boss when it comes to his bank account.6 Speed Thanks this. -

Now you know, don't let it happen again. I did crude work and now on pipeline with point being lease / land owner. They are pains in the back side. Carrier could be tossed off lease for this especially if it's happened before. Same with speeding / smoking etc.
Enviro cleanup crew ( 3 guys, a bobcat and shovels ) minimum $1500 call out. ( don't you have shovel on truck ? )
Anyway, no worries, just tell new carrier you had a small spill ( don't quote quantity ) and carrier tolerance was low. Say you have learned from it and it won't happen again.
Good luck
JMOd o g Thanks this.
