I see a lot of crude jobs posted that pay a percentage. I've always been skeptical about percentages. How do you know you are truly getting paid what you should? And, how are you supposed to compare one pay to another? Are these percentage pays to company drivers or only to O/O? Would it really matter, you still somehow have to know what the gross is, correct?

not really, I was paid 23.5% of the load, I did not care what the gross was, as I knew what each load paid me, and that is all I really care about. I was a company driver... Many of the crude hauling companies pay percentage. I prefer it that way, as I was one to hustle get the loads done, and get home to enjoy life. I always look at what I will make for the day, and that was $350 to $400 per day for 10 hours of work average. We also got paid demerge, at $20 / hr, which means we were held up at the load or unload for more than 1 hour.

Drivers talk. As your working you will eventually learn what each load is paying to the truck and thus know if your being scammed. I show my guys what I make so they are at ease knowing I pay fair.

The percentage just makes it so if the driver busts butt they can make more...... of course they usually hammer smash the equipment to do so which is why I've recently started paying hourly.

    Sure. Because 23.5% of 0 is 0...

If there is full disclosure and access to data I actually have lots of LOVE for %, otherwise give me CPM.

    that's the truth!

I get 35% per barrel in the mileage bracket that a load falls into. Short loads pay less because the deadhead is less. Some days it takes 5 or 6 loads to make good money. Sometimes I can do two loads and make more.

Can someone clarify how driver percentage is calculated.

Say AAA Trucking is leased to ZZZ Logistics and ZZZ Logistics charges owner 20%. If truck makes $10,000 then $8000 goes to AAA Trucking and $2000 to ZZZ Logistics.

Is driver percentage based off of $10,000 or $8000.

If driver percentage is 25% and based off the $10,000 figure he would earn $2500. If it is based off the $8000 figure he would get $2000. Big difference.

Percentage is based off of income to the truck. So in your example it would be from the 8000. That also depends, if the owner gets a fuel surcharge he may not pay you out of that because it's not your fuel your burning.

Most pay total gross, I am far to lazy to calculate fuel surcharge and deduct it.

I bill out 160/hr. After the company takes their cut I am left with 106/hr to the truck. I pay 30% so my driver makes 31.80/hr.
