I've been thinking lately I need a change of scenery as south Texas is getting old. I don't want to freeze in ND, MT, CO or WY, so I was thinking about California. It looks like outside of Bakersfield is where the action is. Does anyone currently work that area or know someone who does? So far it seems Gazelle is recruiting strong in that area, but can't seem to find much else. Of course Plains Marketing has a lot of pipelines there, but don't see any ads for drivers. Anyone have any suggestions or have any insight to how busy it is there. We're all in this to make money obviously and I wouldn't want to leave here where the money is good just because I'm bored. I guess I'm just looking to see if anyone has any experience working in the oilfields in California and their opinions or experiences. Thanks.

I work in the Kern River lease in Bakersfield it is not good right now I have gone from 12-14 hr days to 8hr days. Elk Hills has stacked down all their rigs, companies are laying off and people are saying it will get worse.
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Have you ever seen Bakersfield? It's anything but an improvement over South Texas. Not to mention absurdly high state income taxes.
BigPerm and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
See, this is the information I'm looking for. Like I said Gazelle is recruiting rather aggressively, especially in Paso Robles, offering a $4K sign-on bonus. Kinda made me think that area was rocking. Kinda out by itself, but a half an hour from San Louis Obispo. I haven't been through Bakersfield, but have driven around a lot of California. Not sure if it's an improvement over south Texas, which sucks. San Antonio is ok, which is where I live, but I don't call it home. Florida is home, just here working. I'm just looking for something different like I said. After three years of driving these same roads and going to these same leases is starting to get old. I've mixed it up and worked for a few different companies, which has ultimately done nothing for me except to burn bridges. The biggest burn I created for myself was with Plains Marketing. I will regret that one forever. Anyway, I'm off topic here. Anyone have anything else? Anyone still working 12 hour days making $300-$400 a shift?

It reminds me of Midland/Odessa. I guess if you like mountains it might be better than San Antonio

Don't know much about oil work there,
I can say Bakersfield has a desert climate.. it would definitely be a geographical change with other changes soon to follow. -
rabbiporkchop and GenericUserName Thank this.

Bakersfield is a crap hole. I used to run freight all the time through there. I never saw any oil field trucks. you might see a water hauler every great once in awhile. but for the most part there really isn't a oil boom there.
