Not sure if it's true, but I've heard they have jobs up there that pay six figures, offer free housing, and you work two weeks on/two weeks of hauling water to or from the oil fields. Does anyone know anything about this and, if so, how would one know which companies to seek employment with. Thanks in advance.

They are laying off people. You missed the boom. Just watch oil prices. As they begin to rise again those jobs should come back.

Plenty of threads popping up about lay off notices being sent out and big-time slow downs in the patch right now.

Where I'm from there are many migrant workers who have been working in Western Canada who will be looking to come home, so jobs are already filling up fast on the East Coast as well. It's bad news all around, people out of work and more people competing in other markets mean truckers everywhere are becoming a cheap commodity again.

A lot of you heard was true... but the other replies are correct. The boom is over. Not saying you can't still get a good job in the patch, but it's a lot less likely now than a couple years ago.

If you can afford it, now is the time to come up. Drivers are quitting because they are not getting 60-70 hrs per week. If you can get by on 30-50 hrs while you train on everything that they have (water, winch, power-vac, and possibly crude) you will be sitting pretty good when they start getting busier. I just started back hauling crude and we are very busy. Drivers quit when things slowed down. I am getting 60-70 hrs right now. Good luck.

Good points QualityMike. That is the reason we are staying put where we are with C&J (Nabors). Big Lake was a very busy area six months ago and now it is slooow. People are quitting but when they quit, that gives us more hours. If you can find something now and are willing to settle for less hours then when it picks up you will be in a good position.

Thanks for the replies. I'm honestly willing to go anywhere, and money isn't an issue to get there.

How would I still go about finding these companies? Any company named you could suggest? Thanks again!

I just worked a year at a popular tanker company in North Dakota. I have just went 5 days with being advised not to come to work. Today I realize that driver's are being strung along, not being laid off.. not being fired.. but told "just don't come to work today." I believe this is because the company does not want to pay out unemployment. I am currently considering my options.

Nuverra (Power Fuels) might be a good start. They do have housing. They mainly do water but I have seen some crude and winch trucks. Another suggestion would be Jmac in Williston. They seem to have a variety of equipment in their yard. Good luck.

I believe you can still apply for unemployment even if they have not officially laid you off if you are not working.
