Ever since I was out with the trainer, I was told which shop was good and which shop to avoid like the plague. I thought this post would get a general concensus on how we feel about the shops we have to deal with. I had the opportunity to visit some of the wine cellars, (DR lounges) at quite a few yards. I have heard some horror stories and some positive feed back. I had yet to take my truck to a shop untill recently.

For starters, Kudos and hats off to Oklahoma City.:biggrin_25525: My AC went out in Shreveport, came back on then went off again just north of Dallas. The rear blower had not worked since I picked up the truck. Need less to say, I arived at OKC around 2100, got a PO and a ride to the truck stop then to the hotel. I returned the next morning to meet with the driver that was T-calling my load to Wichita. I was pleasantly suprised that not only was my AC up, the blower motor was fixed and I had a new inspection done. I was on the road by 1600.

Why didnt I stop in Irving? well, maybe some one has a story about that shop they would like to share.

    Ah yes, the Irving shop.

That place has quite possibly the slowest mechanics in the company and you can expect to be there for hours (sometimes days) if they have too many trucks sitting out front. The last time I was there, I called a friend who just happened to be there at that shop and he told me that he was 33rd in line to get into the shop.

Needless to say, I kept right on going until I got down to laredo to have my truck inspection done. I'm not going to risk the load that I have, or have to sit in that shop for days on end to wait for them to come out and look at the truck for 20 minutes.

The 'safety lane' is a joke - three hours to replace a light fixture on the side of the trailer. That resulted in the load being late {was going to the GM android in Arlington, 7 miles away} and me getting chewed out by dispatch because of it even though I was told by dispatch to go through the safety lane because I was in Irving anyway.

I was barbequing in my truck at andriod. went to tyler to get AC units (isnt that ironic) going to witchita. needless to say from the horror stories I heard about the irving shop, I suffered through the day. I put in the macro 22 as soon as I hit the OK border. I had a good experience with OKC, I also heard little rock is a good shop as well.

Split opinion on N Jackson. I got a real dog of a trailer and my truck was due, I was on my way to bama and stopped to get the tires kicked. Kevin the night guy was great. Mechanics were personable and explained stuff to me. Really thorough with the truck and trailer as well. got them both in at the same time. I will admit I did not expect to spend 19 hours, ( 4 truck, 15 Trailer) but oh well better safe than sorry. As for the split opinion, The day crew shuffled around like zombies, wouldnt answer any questions, and heaven forbid you crossed into the bay, they swarmed you like you were trying to breach national security. I had to get authorization to break the seal so they could work on the doors, and since I lock every load, I went in to open my trailer. I got reamed and thought what the hell.

I havn't been a PAM driver in years but I can tell you about the Irving shop based on my past knowledge. If you have a major problem with your truck and are forced to go there for repair, you are put at the back of the truck line. It's first come first serve all the way. Doesn't matter if the actual problem will take 5 minutes or a week.

I wouldn't use the Laredo yard. First time I went there was failing AC and I had a load going across the desert. Laredo mechanic told me everything was fine. 10 hours later I blazing across the desert, so to speak, when not only did my AC die, but the blowers couldn't be turned off. So I had super hot air hitting my face for the hours it took to get to the nearest stop. Checked the cap thermostat and it was 129 degrees in my truck. Called in the problem to dispatch and was told to drive at night. TA would overcharge....... Yea, thanks for caring guys.

Second time I used the Laredo mechanics I was noticing some problems with my breaks. I conveyed my concern about and asked nicely if they would please check them closely and fix em. Two mechanics look under the hood for 45 seconds and declare my truck safe, stating that I must have noticed something else because nothing there indicated potential brake failure.

At this point I got fed and up headed towards Brownsville. What do you think happened 150 miles down the road? My breaks started losing air pressure so fast I almost didnt stop before the popped themselves.

    Wasn't impressed at all

I made the mistake of stopping in there last week - just to have a headlight adjusted because I'd just gotten the truck and didn't have any handtools. There's 4hrs I'll never get back.

Even my trainer and I were stuck there for 6 days for a Stop Engine Light which was rectified with and oil and filter change - some places do it in 30 mins. :biggrin_2554:
From what I've heard, the OKC and Little Rock maint folks are the best.

OK lets not beat up the irving shop too bad, what about the others?
I can give you a what for on Willard. I had a qualcom go bad and rolled in at 1800 on a Friday night. On Fri I would rather be home too.. So I can say that they replaced the bubble around 2300, but the stone cold steve austin look alike seemed to have a crappy attitude. oh and as for the Qcom? it still doesnt work. and I will probably sit here in York PA till monday. oh joy.

I finally got out of Christine. Yes the truck was possessed. Had 3 6's in the truck number. Got a new ride with more miles on it. Runs great, the Opt idle works, I ran like a bat out of hell. Life was good!!!!:biggrin_25525: Oh the qualcom went off directing me to the T-Town shop for an APU install. :biggrin_25510:I am on day 2 and this is not going to be nice. Lets say I forgone the T Town hilton for the travelodge out of my own pocket. Day Two has consisted of an A-B that took all day. and to out process this small concentration camp is taking me longer than it did to out process Ft Benning when I retired. Oh as for the APU? it may not get to Freightliner till Wednesday. Cant bash too hard yet...... more to come.
