I have been driving a 2004 pete 387 250 wheelbase with a 13 and a 475 cat. The truck runs great, but that is it. I have had nothing but bad luck with it since day one. first off I hate the layout of the dash. the light switches are in a odd location, I have to reach around and fumble for them at night. The wiper switch is behind the trailer break on the dash. I found that the odometer is very hard to read with the amber yellowish color. I was not use to how wide the cab is. I felt like I was in a fish bow looking out. as for the battery box that F#$king thing has almost killed me several times. There is no lock on mine or handle to turn. Getting into the truck you kick the handle and it opens up, going down the road i stys in the open position. Whenyou stop and get out you best your ###. Also the mirrors and side windows are a strange configuration. I am 6'3" my seat is as far back and as low as it can go. When looking out the mirrors the sidewindow divider is right in the way. I have not been fond of this truck I like kenworth products much better. But I see alot of these on the road, so I figure there is better experinces out there. This truck makes me like my Mack Granite with no airbags much better. Thnaks for reading let everyone know if your experince is better. :biggrin_25523:

My local Freightliner dealer has a number of 06 and 07 387s that they have had for sale for about 15 months, they started out at $55,000, a salesman told me yesterday that they will accept "any offer" to get them sold. He mentioned $30,000... that's what I call depreciation!

How do you like not being able to see the high beam indicator with the steering wheel tilted up, and being blinded by th indicator if the steering wheel is down.

    And the cup holders suck.

It's the same in a 379, especially the cruise control indicator light at night.

My grandpa was a truck driver for many years, and I have a truck driving licence too, but being a 4-wheeler now. Your Forum is really big and with interesting and useful topics, so I sometimes just read it here and there.

As for too bright indicator lights, may be this will help: Using a permanent alkohol-based black marker, make strokes on that light like "/////" Or put a half-transparent adhesive band on that light. This should dim a too bright light, still leaving it visible and the "dimmer" removable.

Must be pretty common issue. I've got an Acura TL and I love everything about the car, except you can dim the entire dash until it's almost out EXCEPT for the high beam indicator. Time to break out the electrical tape.

I love my 387. Been driving them every sense they first came out. What a great truck. A Pete with some run. I'm 6'4" and it's nice to be able to sit in a truck I don't have to worry about smacking my head on. I find the mirrors to find. Then again I don't sit on the floor. I have no problem with the battery box coming open. I find the lights easy to get to as well as the wiper switch. The amber dash lite is fine. I turn my down to almost off. Now the bright lite indicator is a problem. But a black marker will fix that.

Over all a great truck. As I told my term mng at the time I first tested one " I'll take it. It rides like a Pete but you don't need 40 acres to turn it and it has some run in it."

Being short (5'4) I drove a 379 and my knees kept rubbing the steering column. I like the 387 myself except the sleeper mounted antennas cause I like to run after market stuff (Wilson 2000, different coax cable). People say the 387 is just a fleet truck and isn't Paccar quality. I beg to differ. I never drove one but I sat in one and I liked the roominess of it. I hate a small cab cause I don't like the cramped feeling but then again I'm short so I have to have the seat all the way forward and in the 379 I felt like I was in the steering wheel and I didn't like that at all. At least with a Freightliner or International it felt like I was sitting further back which was much more comfortable. Honestly I prefer an International as a favorite truck of mine.

I can see you pointing out some really serious issues... wiper switch, odometer, wide cab, broken battery box and windows dividers. Perhaps Peterbilt should recall all of them bad 387s :biggrin_2559:

Seriously tho, its a hard-runner's dream...
It's bullet shape comes with lifetime fuel discount for... driving fast.
It has Paccar quality and belongs to Peterbilt service network... which sucks much less then FL, IH and Volvo
Perfectly limited visibility cuts amount of sunlight bombarding my eyes... which helps keep on trucking day and night day after day, night after night.
But sleeper is easy to find if needed, 40 inches between the seats welcomes you like you deserve to jump into cool pool.
With Weather Package and carpet floor 387 is quiet like Lexus (or maybe that Family3 ISX does that).
Since it is 379 with different cab... it rides like dream, even setback FA can't screw it much. It still like running in straight line, unlike Volvo and other wannabes
But the best thing is, just a few good O/O are running 387's - its pleasure to be unique in these commie-days... Hook up good reefer and people will notice too...

One more thing, 387 has almost nothing to do with T2000 except few common parts (mostly glass). After seeing pics of T700 I believe all the KW engineers wanted, was... to be more like Pete (same thing happened to Cascadia designers lol), however they apparently never drove their own products for longer then few minutes. Fridge GOTTA BE ON THE DRIVER SIDE:sign7:. So we can use it sometime :biggrin_2559:
