I have an annoying rattle in my steering column that seems to come and go. My truck is an 05 379. It seems to be worse right after a grease job. I've taken the covers off where it sounds like it's coming from but can't find anything that seems loose or worn. I hope it's not the steering box. Is this what you had?

I have an 04 KW. My steering does the same. It's my steer gear or some call it the steer box. It's the part at the end of your steering shaft. It's mounted on the frame rail, under the hood and in front of your drivers side steer wheel. They are not very hard to change but weigh around 85 pounds and cost somewhere between $600 and $800.

I need to change mine out too.

yeah, check everything else first though, that was the first and only time that that fixed the problem. a rattle, or shake could be caused by anything from a bum tire to kingpins to a worn steering shaft, etc.etc.etc.
Its very possible it could be your box but i woulnt want to tell someone to buy a 600 dollar box and still have a problem:biggrin_25513:

Check the "u-joints" in the steering shaft. If I'm not mistaken there are 4 joints in a Pete, 2 under the hood and 2 inside the cab section of the shaft. I had the same problem and changed the outside 2 and that helped but it wound up being one of the inside 2. I just went ahead and changed all 4.

I just changed my steer gear out this weekend. It drives like a new truck. Still there was a lot of rattling in the steering wheel. I got home from the shop and noticed it was low on fluid. I guess the shop filled the reservoir but it didn't cycle through the pump. I added more fluid but I haven't drove it yet. I hope this fixed my problem. I will find out this week when I leave out.

I got my steer gear at truck pro. It was $511 with exchange. I got it put on for next to nothing at a local shop. After I saw how easy it was to put on I saw I could have did it myself. I'm not too worried about that though. The local shop I use doesn't charge very much at all.

Steering still rattling at idle. It stops when I bump up the rpms. I'm thinking its the pump. I'm not changing it though. I've put enough on the old KW for now. I'll just deal with a little rattle

My '02 379 developed a rattle near the steering wheel this winter only took me 2 months to figure out it's in the turn signal lever assembly.

I was told that there is a sealed pressed bearing on the steering column, and they do wear out.
