The check engine light came on today. It gives a "98". According to Peterbilt it is a "coolant diverter valve fault." Any of you ever dealt with this? Is it something I can fix myself or is it major surgery that Peterbilt should do?

    Specs: 2006 Pete 379, C15 Acert @ 550 HP/1850 FPT, Eaton Fuller 13spd, 355 rears.

If your mechanically inclined sounds like something you could do yourself if not dont take it to peterbilt take it to cat. Anytime your dealing with the motor best to take it to the manufacturer they know more about them than any peterbilt tech will. Just my .02 then again might need them back when my tractor gets outta the shop lol

its problly the wires going to the coolant diverter or the solenoid on the diverter itself. its located on the pass. side just in front of the bottom turbo. sets right above the oil cooler.the diverter is bolted to the turbo pre cooler. easy to get to and simple to replace the solenoid if needed. last one i bought was around 70 bucks or so. also check the 2 wires goin to it. sometimes they melt from heat of the engine or turbo or they rub and short out.easy to work on though. good luck.

Where in Texas are you from. I am from Dallas and have a good mechanic that does really good work. Their rate are half of what a big shop offers.

Most of the time, it is a wiring issue (broken or chaffed wire). If it sets a code, then it's an electrical problem, and not the valve itself. It is on the right side of the engine a little above the frame rail behind the water pump in the precooler. The wires are not in a very good spot and can get chaffed up. Check the wires, sometimes they break off right at the valve. You can buy just the solenoid part of the valve which is a lot easier to change than the whole valve since you wont have to drain the coolant. It is a 2 wire plug and a nut. Slide the solenoid off and the new one on, install the nut and plug it in.

If the wires all look good, I can get you the part # on the solenoid tomorrow at work, I recently replace one. If you have an ohm meter, you can ohm out the solenoid. Unplug it and test the solenoid, it should be low, if it's open, then the solenoid is bad.

If you could get that part number that'd help a bunch. I' m going to check those wires here in a bit.

So I changed the coil assembly today. The check engine light went off briefly but came back on, it's still flashing 98 which shows to be a coolant diverter valve fault. What's next?
