Can a fellow find a decent Pete 379 that doesn't need a rebuild right away? Maybe a 2000 - 2004 or so?? I don't want to look like Jed Clampett going down the road, but I thought I'd ask.
Plan on pulling flats or vans. Live in the Midwest.
Any Good Used Pete 379s??

first off, decide if you want to pull flats or vans. You need a very different spec truck for either. Secondly, the 379 looks pretty, but gets worst mpg and cost more then an aero truck. Most 379 have such a high value do to their look and then people keep um untill they are ready to die. TMC transport sells some well maintained 379 trucks, but many will need inframe soon.
Truth is, you oculd buy a 30k Freghtliner that doesn't need an inframe...and still have 20 k for when it does.......OR.....buy a 50-60k 379 that needs an inframe. either way, a 379 will cost more to run and buy..
If your heart is set on a 379, TMC is a decent place to buy one.GearWarrant Thanks this. -
Shop around, there's good buys out there. Took me a couple months but I found an 03 for a good price and I get a good 6mpg. I 'm way happier than I would be getting 7.5 in a rattling piece of junk wondering when it was going to fall apart.GearWarrant and last 1 Thank this. -
TMC is selling their 06's and 07's asking 38-42k these are well maintained trucks with like new interiors. Some are in the high 800k miles but most have hit a million if you could get into a lower mile one you should be able to get a year out of it . Goverened at 62 mph at 1450rpm the engines have not been run real hard. They are listed at truckpaper.com pg 14-16 in 379 listings. As a former driver for them I would feel comfortable buying from them if I was in your position. good luck in your search.

Thanks for all the posts. I am not in the market quite yet, but will be in the next year to 18 months. Just trying to figure out what I should be looking for in terms of what I want.
I am considering a 386, 387, 379, W9, T600 etc....
I know I can get better fuel mileage out of a Shaker 120 or something, but I don't want to spend all my time in the shop either. I would rather be truckin' than fixin' all the time. Looking for quality.
However, I don't have any experience except with Internationals. They last truck I drove was probably a NEW 96 9700 with under 100K on it. I am sure once I get back out there and actually get to test drive some of them I will be swayed one way or the other. -
I'm glad I found the 03 that I did. 6NZ as in single turbo. Best motor CAT ever made.
-
Which brings me to a question in the back of my mind. What years had the twin turbo? From what I have read, I need to run from those. What engines are they specifically?
-
I think they changed in 04. I know 04s have the twin. I'm not sure where it went from there but I THINK 03 was the last year of the single turbo. I'm far from an expert on this. I just know the single turbo is good, twin is not. I looked for months for a good 379 with the 6NZ.

I have been trying to wrap my head around the Cat engine thing. I don't know the difference between a C15, 3406, 6NZ, Acert etc, etc.
