I'm not a professional drive but could pick up some side jobs and an occasional weekend driver to make some extra cash. I found a 95 379 with over 2 million miles. I know that's a lot. The truck looks in great shape and is sharp with little rust. asking price is around 17k. Would this be a good start? I know nothing of the motor and other parts, new tread all the way around though and brakes at 60%. It has comes stacks and air cleaners and a sleeper, although most likely wouldn't be using it too much. I'd also be willing to invest in this for the future if the frame and body and all are good. Would that be a wise choice? Another thought would be to replace the Cummings motor with a Detroit rebuilt direct from the factor. Is that possible? I know cost would range 30k plus for something like this right?! Thanks for all the help, much appreciated!

I would say that motor has been rebuilt at some point. However the fact that you don't know how many miles are actually on the engine transmission and rears. It is a 9 to $10k truck in my opinion. Anytime you're buying a truck you're taking a real chance if you don't know any history on the engine transmission and rear those are your life line doesn't matter how good the truck looks if it doesn't run its not going to do any good

At that milage everything has either been done or will need doing very soon. If your intention is to work it casually, you'll need to determine how long it will take to recoup your investment. It sounds like an expensive hobby to me.

As for the engine, the N14 has as many fans as the Series 60 and I doubt you'll gain anything tangible in the process of switching.

If warranty on an inframe is something you want, both Detroit and Cummins have an age limit in the block. 10 years/ 1,000,000 miles.

There are older, NICE 379 Petes worth much more than that. A Pete is worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay, and some folks really like them.

I would not care for a 2 million mile truck, but it might be worth that money.

Seems a bit steep to me. That's about what I paid for mine but I have a crane mounted to it. It's an '89 with about 850k on it and an inframe a couple of years ago.

I just picked up a 99 379 with half the miles 500 horse series 60, 13 speed, 40 rears, and a 60 inch bunk (which Im going to be taking off), has a fancy "canadian class" interior for 10k. (needed tires and needs an ac compressor and condenser)

I would shop around if I were you man.
