wow, I knew without even looking you haven't been out here long.....You are entitled to your opinion though, thanks for sharing..

OP, the newer Cats (Accerts) are boat anchors and thats coming from a die hard Cat man....All that emission crap on the Cats is a major nightmare and the new ISX isn't much better, thats coming from someone who has turned a lot of miles in BOTH...Now if you can keep the ISX out of the shop it will pull hard, as good as or better than any big Cat I've ever owned or driven...My main issues with the ISX were that dang EGR, EGR cooler, and that stupid re-gen system they all caused me a great deal of down time....I'm convinced if you get a shop to strip the emmissions off and turn that thing up you'd have yourself a good motor but obviously whatever warranty you have is toast if you get caught by Cummins..

As someone posted above if you go Cat go older like a 6nz or 3406e....I've heard (never driven) that the Paccar's are much better now but thats just hearsay so take it FWIW I guess..

don't even get me started on Detroit's and all the money I dumped into that POS Series 60 I owned..

Thanks bull rack, I really want a 389 I'm scared to get into something with a ton of miles already so that's why I've been looking at 2010-2012 also to keep the price down. On the same hand I don't want to buy a truck with problems from the gate. Thanks for the info on the engines, I'm not a gear head by a long shot, I'm somewhat knowledgable on some engines but didn't know the new cats are junk. So, if I'm looking at a 389, would it be a safe bet to aim for a cummins, or paccar? And that 388 in the pic is beautiful, I also like the 386. Not a bad lookin truck

That 388 is nice huh ?

I dont like the 386's but hey , I am not the one shelling out the cash now am I ? Lol

All this new aerodynamics takes away from the classic aesthetic of what trucks used to look like ......
    Thats just my opinion ,

Weren't the early paccar mx engines trouble for lots of people, but the newer ones seem to be better? Thought the early ones had a lot of head gasket problems and what have you. I have heard they are a bit better on fuel than the cummins, but do not make much power. Also you would have to go to a certified dealer (not all of them are certified!) to get it fixed ... the cummins has a much larger service network if needed. Seems like any new engine you will have to find a shop somewhere, at some time.

Not everyone competes for the freight that only pays a few cents into the profit zone. Some can afford a cool and very comfortable, classic looking truck that is made of metal rather than plastic, some will lead you to believe that the shape of the hood on a machine weighing in at 80 thousand pounds will make a hill of beans of difference ... Everyone's business model is different, and to each their own.

If I had to make a choice I would take the Cummins and just deal with the emmissions, but thats what I would do based on my experience..What works for me might not work for you or anyone else and vice versa..

Again, I have zero driving experience with the PACCAR motor but my friend Dennis had one in a new 389....He had HUGE problems with it throwing fault codes but eventually they got it sorted out....I guess it was mostly all under warranty but the down time is the killer and that payment won't go away !!

Take your time, do your research, and make sure this is exactly what you want because it is a major commitment.
