Are you using the cat tool to set the backlash? How is it jumping time? Stripping the gear teeth, or is the idler gear adjustment slipping from where you set it?

yes on the cat tool its not stripping the gear teeth the idler gear is'nt slipping when it slips time it shears off the gear for the cam shaft.

Are you sure the cam turns freely, and it's not binding causing the gear to shear off?

It sounds like you didn't get the bolts tight that hold idler gear in place causing it to back away resulting in excessive gear lash. This is the first time I've heard of a c15 jumping time and I've worked on and overhauled my fair share. Have you pulled the front off of the motor too look for other missing or broken teeth?

dang impossible to (jump) timing unless you shear teeth off gear. if it has done twice then something wasn't done right. did it bend valves? check the counter weights in cam gear and inspect cam gear assembly for wear and cracks. if you have lash gear set to tight it will fail after the engine heats up. must dial indicator it for the lash. using the cat tool is not enough.check the spacer ring that goes between the cam and cam gear. make sure it was installed correctly. did the cam walk forward and hit the cover?
