My Peterbilt has had this check engine light on now off and on for about a month now. It started out only coming on if i had a load and or strain on the engine 30k+ mainly the I24 route between kentucky and ga, now its on all the time. It just so happens that the two times I've made it to the dealership the light turned off. They put it on their machine but the mechanic says that they cant see the code unless its on now. I'm just wondering if anyone can fill me in on this code? I don't k ow what it means and I don't want something major to happen if I can catch it.

Truck is automatic, cummins isx 420,000 miles. A old US Express truck. Just regened.

1)The dealer has a poor tech. 2) sounds like it is your regen system. Make sure the regen switch is not turned off. Next, park and set the brake with the engine running...initiate a regen. Keep the engine reved up with the throttle...repeat this three times. Also with these new regen trucks...the check engine light comes on a lot. If it does not stay on for some time...don't worry about it:)

Thanks for the reply. I'm not actually in the truck, I had my driver do the regen and its working like it did when I first picked it up. He was driving along doing 63 when it just lost power with no throttle response and the check engine light flashed a few times. There was no DPF light so initially I was fearing the worse. He drives solo and with the winter hes idling more now. It was set to auto regen, the switch may not be working correctly. I will have him regen weekly now though.

The engine ECM will store all codes active and inactive until cleared so I don't know what that dealer was doing. probably just feeding you a line, or using a program other than cummins insite.
What you described here sounds like its losing the throttle position sensor signal, which could be the TPS itself or some bad wiring somewhere. I had one truck that just taking the OEM side plug off the ECM and putting some dielectric grease on it fixed the problem.
Getting the codes read with cummins insite will tell you for sure what code its throwing though.

With the parking brake set, tap the rotary knob on the dash, and a row of arrows should show up on the left side of the display. turn the knob one click at a time until "Diagnostic- Faults found" appears on the screen. Tap it again to select, select engine, and scroll down to see all faults found.
I'm going to venture a guess that's it's going to say particle trap outlet temp 1, which is basically Cummins speak for a failed regen. Any exhaust leaks or a malfunctioning doser injector will cause this.

I definitely thinks it's something to do with the regen, now there's a DPF light on. I'm going to have him my driver regen it two or three times. Its running fine, hes pulling 43k from SC to PA. He's parking at a Petro tonight so hopefully they can pull the ECM to find out the specific codes. I just want to know. Every time he calls I'm like is this the call. lol. Thanks for the help.

Ended up taking it to Hunter Keystone Peterbilt Clearfield, Pa.... Ended up being a leaking or busted manifold before the turbo, turbo was barely hanging on with 2 screws, leaking engine air cooler, out dated ECM. I also had the oil changed and greased. $1,600 minus engine oil cooler. All the codes were related to the regen, exhaust temp etc. Def happy to finally find out what the codes meant.

Also, found out that US Express do oil changes every 40k miles. Wasn't too happy to hear that. Just got to make sure oil is changed regularly.

US Xpress likes to run their trucks into the ground and they rarely keep up on their maintenance intervals.

US Express uses synthetic oil. Many companies, like walmart, are using it and getting 40000 mile oil changes...as incredible as that sounds, oil testing shows it works:()
