Good deal, that is important, as I heard if the motor shuts off with the engine brake on, it can do some damage. There should also be a cut out switch on the throttle by the pump. I rewired my hood too. The problem is when the hood is opened and closed and the wiring bends back and forth next to the radiator. Let us know how it goes. It's always cool when someone saves a 359.

Luckily, the pump switch is working fine, as are the dash switches. Yes, it is that short piece between the rad and the hood that is pooched. I'll probably just replace that piece for the time being as I have no shortage of things to do to get ready for an inspection...... After tackling the power steering, I have a small fuel leak on the injection pump, and a couple engine oil leaks, but I think they will lessen with the oil level being returned to normal. It is a full 3 1/2" over the full mark, due to the power steering leak. Then move on to gauges and exhaust etc.........

Those are both very nice looking trucks, but I must say i tend to like the '85 Day cab best. It looks to have been very near to new in that picture, did it replace the '72? Or did you have them both for a time.
Well. progress is slow, but I got the hood wiring done today, and the power steering pump is off and the seal is ordered and should be in tomorrow. I also took the fuel lines off of the injection pump and will hopefully put it back together leak free, perhaps not tomorrow, but hopefully the next day. Ran the vacuum through it today as well and cleaned up all, well, most of the mouse droppings and crap, hopefully it will get back to not smelling as musty soon.
Something this truck has that I have no experience with are wedge brakes. The fronts are wedges, how are they adjusted? Or should I look at trying to convert them over? Any idea how far a guy would have to go to make the conversion, or should I look for a complete new axle?
Thanks again, we will get this old truck back on the road if we aren't careful........ LOL

No, the '85 day cab was like 10 years later. It was a "20 footer". Looked good from 20 feet, but was a crummy paint job and had many miles. I got it cheap, but never pulled anything with it. Like I say, I saw a guy in Fla. that mounted a smaller camper trailer on the back of a 359, and was going to that to that truck, but ran out of steam. As far as the brakes, I've never had a truck with wedge brakes, but there are video's on YouTube showing how they work. There are star wheels, kind of like a car on the wheel cylinder inside the drum. Not sure if there are rubber plugs on the backing plate, like a car, to adjust them. My '72 didn't have front brakes, but if the truck had them originally, DOT requires them to stay on. Might want to update to "S" cam brakes. Much better.

Now that I'm off the road, I've been talking with the wife about getting a project similar to this, but having lots of trouble convincing her to let me spend that kind of money :tearyeyed:

Hi crzy, my '85 in post #13 was really just a hobby truck. I bought it in 2003 and that's right when fuel skyrocketed. Thing is, wifey is right. Everything is so expensive nowadays, if you run it, you can kind of justify the cost, but to have it sit, it's basically why I sold it.

Well the picture must have been taken from 20 or so feet, because it looked good to me...LOL
Yes, front brakes will be staying. I've driven a couple trucks with no front brakes, but around here the hills are a little on the extreme side and a guy wants all the brakes he can get his hands, or in this case feet on. 12-14% grades are common on the local roads and deer and rock falls are also common, and don't get me started on the tourists in the summer..... LOL.

So after an oops, I forgot to place your order, another oops I got you the wrong part and a few busy days that didn't offer the time and one lazy one where I refused to do anything I didn't have to (#### cold and windy), I replaced the sealed bearing on the power steering pump. hopefully when I go out in a day or two the oil level will be the same. The seals were very brittle and just fell apart when I poked them with a screwdriver.
Fuel lines are back on as well and the leak is all dried up, so progress is slowly happening. I think I'll try and get the exhaust fixed up next, too many leaks to hear what is going on. Have to get an oil change on it as well, it has way too much in it at the moment. Want to give the engine a good bath also, I hate having an oily, grimy, fire-trap of an engine. it needs new breathers as well. but I'll have to stick with what I can afford for the time being. This will be a while before it is ready to hit the road.....

I have the same power steering leak on my 3406b in my 379, leaks into the engine oil and runs the reservoir dry. Fix is to replace the pump as best I've been told.
