I'm in a dilemma. I am close to graduating and have 2 choices. One company (pay is less) has trucks with inverters. The other company does not allow an inverters, zip. Both do not use APUs. If I were to go with company #2, no inverter, should I even be shopping for a mini fridge such as this Igloo-3.2-cu.-ft.-2-Door-Refrigerator-and-Freezer-Stainless-Steel, or should I be looking at something along the lines as this Whynter-FM-65G-65-Quart-Portable-Fridge-Freezer/? I don't know the difference. I believe they both have compressors, but one has a DC adapter? The other is, I believe, a 3 prong? Would one not work using the cigarette lighters, or are both able to work? I need a freezer, its most important to me if I want to have a DO IT YOURSELF A/C unit in the truck.

Side note: I believe these cig lighters have a max withdraw of 300 watts.

In my opinion an OTR driver should scratch any company that doesn't allow inverters big enough to run a microwave or fridge off the list. It's such a huge benefit and a properly installed inverter, which is not hard or expensive to do, is not dangerous. Honestly, companies have no excuse for not doing this.

    BlueThunderr and tazman74 Thank this.

I agree, but I'm brand spanking new to OTR and I don't want to be earning less than .35 CPM to begin with. Choice #1 starts off at .34 but at 6 months gives you .35 cpm. choice #2 starts off at .32cpm + .5 quarter bonus, then 4th month jumps up to .37 + .5 cpm...

There are Freezers/coolers that do us DC Cig Lites, but they are 3x more expensive. I don't care for a microwave, I can buy a propane stove and cig lite oven. But I need to be able to freeze 1 gallon jugs of water for the a/c.

But Once I do my year, I'll move on and avoid all companies that don't at least provide a inverter or lets you install one. Between, the company I'm thinking (choice 2) is knight, and from what I hear, my terminal is pretty great to work with.

So, I dug up an old inverter >> See here << I never had the chance to open. I found out it has a dc adapter, and also alligator clips. I believe most, if not all trucks have CB radio connectors? I just need to find out what the wires are rated at. If not, the CIG lighters may do, since the CIG lighters are rated ~240 watts and the DC wiring for this product is rated at 300 watt load. I'm now going to look into the cheap mini fridge, such as the igloo in the link above, and see how much power it draws at surge. I doubt the igloo would draw more than 300 watts when the compressor kicks on, hopefully I'm not wrong. So I guess we don't need to connect an inverter directly to the battery bank... ha-ha, feel like i'm talking to myself but I'm determined to make this work for me.

Edit: Just found out the igloo freezer/fridge has a start up of 690 watts. 115 v // 6 amp... DARN!

They have a lot less capacity than 300 watts. That's about 23 amps.

If you were going to choose a fridge, then I would get the one at walmart, it is like an Engel which is a good fridge but if I had to get one, I would just get another Engel, mine has yet failed me and draws a lot less than most of them with an inverter.

Thanks Ridgeline. I think I'm going to get a dometic freezer and a koolatron cooler or a cargo kooler. I just edited the post above and found out that these AC mini fridges require too much power at start up.

Well, I got my fridge setup done. I can snap a picture of it if you guys want. I took off the front half of the top bunk in the sleeper. I got the little 1.5 csu ft. Fridge from menards for $70. I had like $80 on an in store credit, so I figured what's to loose? I routed an extension cord from the top of that to under the bottom bed. Under there I mounted a $150 2000 watt power inverter. So, I mounted the fridge and a small power strip up there, and with a small fan and the mini fridge, it only pulls 80 watts. I had it on for about 4 hours and didn't move the battery power at all. The fridge is dead quiet, and the fan from the power inverter has a hum that makes for a decent white noise. Should work nicely!

I'm going to get a matching piece of grey vinyl to cover the top of the half bunk. Then I'm going to get a 90 degree strip of aluminum and screw it down from the fridge to the drivers side on the front edge of the half bunk. That way we can put things up there and they won't slide off.
