Frozen gas tax leads to toll roads

Frozen gas tax leads to toll roads
5/20/07
Quote:
WASHINGTON - A cash crunch is fast approaching for the government trust fund that pays to build and repair highways and bridges.
The federal tax on a gallon of gas has not risen in 14 years and Congress is reluctant to increase it. People are demanding more fuel-efficient vehicles — less gasoline used, fewer dollars for the fund.
States already are looking for other places for road-building money — toll road and consumption-based sales taxes, for example. They worry that the fund's looming shortage could hurt their efforts to address traffic congestion as well as environmental and safety problems caused by inadequate roads.
The situation can only get worse in 2009, when revenues for the Federal Highway Trust Fund begin falling short of planned federal spending.
The fund provides the overwhelming bulk of federal dollars spent on highways. It gets its money mainly from the 18.4 cents-a-gallon excise tax that drivers pay at the pump.

The real problem lies at the feet of the gooberment thats wastes the money they do get. Like Micheal Moore at a buffet table they will consume all that they can get their hands on. No matter what they get, it will never be enough.

Please tell me that your not so blind that you can't see the price gouging from big oil? GEEESE man. What will it take for you NEOCONS to stop sticking up for the ones that are sticking it to you the most.
There have been over 200 refineries closed in the USA since the mid 80's. They do that so they can not only raise their prices, but to cut their over head. Which leaves the American people (aka..you and me) to pay for their so called "supply and demand" factor. If they refine less, then they can charge more.
They could have kept the refineries open. Chevron re-tooled a refinery in CA last year(or two years ago). They didn't make as much proffit, but they still cleared over $12 billion.
Seriously, you need to wake up.
The toll coming out of New Jersey on 78, is going up to $16.25. I also heard the Indiana toll road (I80) is going to be over $30 soon.

Lets get a couple things straight.
number one I am not a neocon.

number two this thread IS NOT about the price of oil

number three this thread is not about big oil bending us over, which by the way they are, feel free to start a new thread on that subject

This thread is about the tax on fuel sold and going to the hands of the gooberment who then wastes what they do get.

As a shareholder of Exxon Mobil, I hope gas goes to $10.00 a gallon. I'm sure the people who own the other 5.6 billion shares want to make money too.

Big Oil is not ten guys in Texas, its millions of Americans.

My apologies about calling you a NEOCON. THat was pretty low.
But about the price gouging. THe government doesnt have to raise taxes. They just need to hold the Big Oil Co.'s feet to the fire and make them bring their prices down. If they did that, then they could raise the taxes a little. The cost of fuel has everybody over a barrel(of crude). Including the gooberment.
I completely agree, they are waisting our taxes on unnecessary things. Like Iraq, Haliburton, Corrperate welfare, and so on and so on.
I wonder how many toll roads could go free for the $700billion we have spent in Iraq.

LOL, thats the silliest thing i have ever heard. You hope fuel goes to $10.00 per gallon. You have to be crazy. Im sure your few shares in Exxon mobile will not carry you through a depression. Not to mention the extra cost of food, clothes, insurance, medical care, no job. You might make a few thousand bucks on your stocks. Only if you sell them, and there is someone to buy it. But i would imagine, if fuel gets to $10 a gallon, Buying an exxon stock would be the stupidest thing anyone could ever do. Who would you sell it to?
But you go ahead and support Big oil over Americans. But when it hits the fan, you be sure to tell everyone how much money you could have made if you could have sold that stock.
