By "untold" do you mean "we cannot demonstrate evidence of"?
"Refusal to assimilate"? That's fascinating. Is it possible you're not just talking about language any more?

In 1968, Grandpa went back to the same orchard and was refused work, because the man said he had no work for him. He had hired a group of illegals to do the same job for 50cents less than minimum wage. |
And you blame the illegal immigrants for that? It's clearly the fault of the orchard owner that your grandfather wasn't able to find work there. It was his decision to switch over to cheaper, illegal workers. It was his decision not to hire your grandfather. Blaming the immigrants seems to me like blaming drivers for pollution instead of auto manufacturers.

Ah, but the reality is that if your husband is willing to get the same pay as any illegal, he's more likely to get hired because he can work legally and he speaks English.
When I was in high school, I was able to secure a job as a landscaper simply because I spoke English and had a driver's license. Once hired, it was easy for me to get promoted to assistant foreman and then foreman because I was able to communicate with the landscaping management and the customers. And I was legal, so there was never any concern about people calling INS. A secure worker is a more reliable worker and is a more marketable worker.
I'll bet I could get your husband a job here in the SF Bay area with a landscaping company in less than 24 hours, even with the economy in a bit of a slump.
