Why don't I worry for my children? Because I'm just fine. Learning "Hindi ako nagasalita nong tagalog." (I don't speak tagalog) didn't make my head explode. I didn't turn into a Fillipino. I didn't even start hating my country. I learned a little and it helped me discover a rich cultural heritage.

What would the specific harm be in people speaking more than one language?

Why must we cater to any language?

It's not catering, it's the acceptance of reality. The US has never been monolingual. The 13 colonies were just as multilingual as the USA in the 2000s. The status quo is multilingual, and a monolingual policy would be an imposition on what has already been established for hundreds of years.

Beyond that, though, is the idea of America. Are the days of “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses” really gone? The move towards monolingual policy is coupled with closing borders and cracking down on immigration. Forgive me for using such a powerful word, but that seems unAmerican.

I'd still also like to know

Does the statue of Liberty say:

Forgive my translation.

Hazme tu cansado, su pobre, su Huddled Masses

No, it doesn't.

On the back of the dollar bill it says "Annuit cœptis" and "Novus ordo seclorum". Should the national language be Latin?

I'd be fine with that, I took 4 years in high school.

Spanish isn't too different from Latin. Would it be harmful to recognize that the US is the "cultural melting pot" that we nutty liberals say it is?

You really should research the phrase "melting pot".

You obviously aren't sure of its meaning.

That's another red herring, but I'll indulge you.

The term, which originates from the United States, is often used to describe societies experiencing large scale immigration from many different countries.

Ronno, what would you see as the harm done by keeping the US multilingual?

Keeping the U.S. multilingual?

You can speak pig Latin at home for all I care. But why should I as a taxpayer have to indulge a Spanish speakers inability to communicate in English?

If we are going to have to print everything in Spanish, why not Mandarin? French? German? Farsi?

Past immigrants realized it was in their best interest to assimilate as quickly as possible so to increase opportunities available to them and their children.

Somehow Spanish speakers seem to think they should be treated differently.

So your complaint is the cost? How much does the federal/state/county governments spend on multilingual services? Compare that to how much in taxes we get from non-English speaking citizens, legal guest workers, and illegal guest workers and things may start to make more sense.
