Audit finds many missing U.S. weapons in Iraq
Government report: About 14,000 weapons — 1 in 25 — unaccounted for

WASHINGTON - Nearly one of every 25 weapons the U.S. military bought for Iraqi security forces is missing and many others cannot be repaired because parts or technical manuals are lacking, a government audit said Sunday.

The Defense Department cannot account for 14,030 weapons — almost 4 percent of the semiautomatic pistols, assault rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and other weapons it began supplying to Iraq since the end of 2003, according to a report from the office of the special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction.

The missing semiautomatic pistols, assault rifles, machine guns and other weapons will not be tracked easily: The Defense Department registered the serial numbers of only about 10,000 of the 370,251 weapons it provided — less than 3 percent.

This has happened in every war and every troop movement in history.. and a lot of the time, the weapons, vehicles, supplies, parts, or even people were never sent in the first place. Book keeping errors is usually the culprit. BUT there are usually some supply rats who deal with the natives and always has been..

It does make sense that once it's shipped over the ability to keep good records becomes comprimised. As well I'm sure there's horse trading between the supply guys. I know this may not be pertinent, but remember on M*A*S*H how Radar was always horse trading around the area? I figure that is probably an acurate idea.

I'm not surprised by this report. Like Fozzy said this has and will continue to happen in every war.

LOL, that's the first thing I thought of too. Maybe people are taking the weapons and mailing them home, like Radar and his Jeep.

Radar wasn't trying to make a few bucks, but I understand your point. When I was in, there was a lot fo swapping and trading going on amoung indivuals, but I never seen anything thing at a unit level like on MASH. When I was in, everybody was a theft. If you seen opptunity you took it. lol Everybody did it.

Some Iraqi general or supply person, stoled the weapons and sold them to the highest bidder. It's like what the nuclear scientist and generals were doing in Russia.

I'll expect the left to try to make this into a Bush provided weapons to the enemy conspiracy. lol

That's why I said the idea was acurate, not the scenario. I'm sure in real life it's quite different. M*A*S*H was a sitcom after all.

When an Iraq soldier or police gets issued a gun, then turns around and leaves his position and goes back to the enemy, i doubt he is gonna turn in his gun before hand.
