GM May Close Two More Plants Under Deal

DETROIT — The tentative contract between General Motors Corp. (GM) and the United Auto Workers would allow GM to close a plant each in Michigan and Indiana and possibly shut down several other facilities, according to a detailed copy of the agreement.

The moves are the downside of job security pledges that the UAW won in the negotiations, including commitments for new products at 16 plants. About 74,000 hourly GM workers will vote on the pact starting this week, with a final tally to be done by Oct. 10.

Gregg Shotwell, a GM worker and frequent critic of the UAW, posted most of the contract details on the Internet. He said he received the agreement from a local union official who attended a Friday meeting in Detroit. He would not identify the official, but the accuracy of its contents was confirmed for The Associated Press by a union leader who requested anonymity because members have not yet voted on the pact.

The agreement would let GM sell or close a stamping plant in Indianapolis and close an engine plant in Livonia, in suburban Detroit. According to the detailed document, called the "white book," work at the Indianapolis stamping operation will continue or be reallocated to another GM plant "until such time as the plant can be sold to an outside buyer."

There's a couple of UAW guys in my welding cert. program. I wonder what they have to say about this, now that it's looks like they just lost their jobs for a lower health insurance premium for their union brothers, or whatever it was. I wonder if they think it was worth it, lol.

The Unions of the past were so usefull. If it were not for them, our wages and lifestyle would about the same as Mexico's. But todays union, im not so sure how useful they are.
My brother joined the UAW in Camden Ar, back in the mid 80's. They worked for LTV. ANd they needed a union. They all made low wages( About $7 per hours), the working conditions were bad. (acid lines leaked, bomb room walls were too thin, etc etc)
The UAW came in, and the people gave a good fight. But too many scabs. The people in that area were so poor and employment was extremely low. So they didn't have a chance.
Funny thing is, after the UAW left town and the strikers either moved, or found different jobs (usually cutting wood on their own) LTV cleaned up it's act. They spent alot of money fixing the problems and I think gave the scabs a raise.
At least for a while.

I do agree that the union should have won this one
You cant change the retirement packages of past employees
But its another story for current ones
If this keeps up we will end up with no economy
I realize its the American way, but so is economic survival

Unhappy

I know I sound like a total sarcastic a hole. But, when did winning involve the shutting down of 2 plants, in areas that are hurting for jobs? Guess it's all good, so long as it isn't your job.

I would consider it a win, if everyone kept their jobs. Even if I had to stay at my current pay grade and health insurnce. But then again, I tend to look at the overall picture, and not my own personal greed.

The Union dug this hole themselves. The way to resolve this....STOP DIGGING !!!!

But in reality, they must keep digging. Afterall, they are getting the road bed ready for that SuperHighway.

They are closing plants very close to my home, probably kill Janesville WI
But it will in the long run make a stronger company
The days of grow, grow, grow are over
This with the spin off of Delphi will make a stronger core

What do you mean the days of growth are over...the Dow just broke a new record!
If the unions would get the hell out and let the CAR MAKERS make cars! maybe somebody would buy the crap they put out! The facts are that all the other companies put out a better product at a better price! I the big 3 didn't have to pay BILLIONS to these slackers that need more and more...and more! and still want to produce CRAP!

Welcome to capitalism. If the UAW knows so much about car making...why don't we have a uaw CAR?
Truth is they don't know a damn thing and this "victory" proves that these idiots don't give a damn about the worker as an individual, they just care about another check to take the DUES out of...I bet this "victory" had a raise of dues too.

and Maytag is closing a plant in KY!

WOW these unions are doing such a great job!

sending jobs to mexico!

I have to agree the Dow is doing great
And I am anti union
The two big US companies have for ever grown and crossed their fingers hoping the orders would come in, and they did for the most part.
Now that the market for them is shrinking they must down size.
Well its the unions job to stop them even if it kills the company, its the "those poor workers" cant live on less.
If I heard right the cost package for GM per employee is around 75 bucks
I think Toyota is around 35 or was it 25. Either way things must change
