Politics Do Not Pass/Pass With Care. Today's truckers are far more educated and cognizant of the issues regarding politics due to the sharp increase in talk radio, and various trucking news media sources. Talk politics. Do truckers like politicians?

Congratulations to Al Gore for sharing the Nobel Peace Prize with the IPCC...!!!! A well deserved recognition for the work they have done to determine that climate change is with us, and directly impacted by man. Also for bringing the issue into the public eye with his movie, which did a great job of explaining it all.

I have heard quite a few comments here that indicate that there are skeptics here...some seem to think Al Gore just wants to make a buck, some that there is no such thing, some that it's just the suns rays are getting dimmer (or something along those lines), some that people have nothing to do with it, I can't think of any more but I'm sure you'll come up with some...

I thought today would be a good day if people want to talk about it...the thread is already started....

Al Gore is a b00b, and the same thing could be said for the people who gave the Nobel Prize to a Terrorist, a Moron, as well as a b00b.

Oh wow! You aren't a very 'moderate' moderator are you? I can't believe that statements like that are made with a straight face anymore. And BTW, I did get a reply to my PM so maybe you should up the limit from 20 to 50 to something else now for us 'Daily KO's' people.

I thought I'd post this...it's about the level of greenhouse gases being much higher than expected, sooner.

~snip~

Tim Flannery, a world recognized climate change scientist and Australian of the Year in 2007, said a U.N. international climate change report due in November will show that greenhouse gases have already reached a dangerous level.

Flannery said the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report will show that greenhouse gas in the atmosphere in mid-2005 had reached about 455 parts per million of carbon dioxide equivalent -- a level not expected for another 10 years.

~snip~

"We can reduce emissions as strongly as we like -- unless we can draw some of the standing stock of pollutant out of the air and into the tropical forests, we'll still face unacceptable levels of risk in 40 years time," he said.

(question)

Did methane start rising again. Last figures I saw showed it leveling off around 2000 and flat. Was this complete “denialist” bunkum?
Its leveled off for the time being. Pretty close to zero although not quite negative.
But the thawing of the permafrost in Siberia, Canada and Alaska is just getting started. Shallow at this point and requires moisture. Have yet to hit the motherload of yedoma - and precipitation will be increasing in the subpolar as time goes on. Then there are the shallow water methane hydrates up along the northern coasts - and we recently discovered that they are closer to the surface than we had any reason to suspect. I understand the ocean currents around Antarctica are changing, too. Taking warm water deeper. Then there is the increased poleward flow of the ocean currents - partly driven by Hurricanes, I understand.
But yes, the economic setback in Eastern Europe, improved methods of growing rice, the leveling off of the cattle population - we seem to be doing better with regard to our methane emissions. No more exponential growth. In fact it is quite possible that the growth rate of anthropogenic emissions is now negative. Not sure.
In any case, it is good news.

It's serious...not something we can ignore...

I'm not sure what is worse, the Hillary gang, the Ron Paul gang or the Global warming gang.

Is there a difference? lol

To be honest the Ron Paul gang gets on my nerves the most. lol

All they do is this stupid "RON PUAL 2008", "Ron Paul Rocks" crap and then leave, lol. It's just to bump up the Ron Paul thread so it doesn't die.

Although I have to give credit to hard, he put's a real effort into it.

Criticism Of Gores Movie....

Here is what they said on Real Climate about The Inconvenient Truth...

[LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link.

~snip~

There are a few scientific errors that are important in the film. At one point Gore claims that you can see the aerosol concentrations in Antarctic ice cores change "in just two years", due to the U.S. Clean Air Act. You can't see dust and aerosols at all in Antarctic cores — not with the naked eye — and I'm skeptical you can definitively point to the influence of the Clean Air Act. I was left wondering whether Gore got this notion, and I hope he'll correct it in future versions of his slideshow.

Another complaint is the juxtaposition of an image relating to CO2 emissions and an image illustrating invasive plant species. This is misleading; the problem of invasive species is predominantly due to land use change and importation, not to "global warming". Still, these are rather minor errors. It is true that the effect of reduced leaded gasoline use in the U.S. does clearly show up in Greenland ice cores; and it is also certainly true that climate change could exacerbate the problem of invasive species.

Several of my colleagues complained that a more significant error is Gore's use of the long ice core records of CO2 and temperature (from oxygen isotope measurements) in Antarctic ice cores to illustrate the correlation between the two. The complaint is that the correlation is somewhat misleading, because a number of other climate forcings besides CO2 contribute to the change in Antarctic temperature between glacial and interglacial climate. Simply extrapolating this correlation forward in time puts the temperature in 2100 A.D. somewhere upwards of 10 C warmer than present — rather at the extreme end of the vast majority of projections (as we have discussed [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. ).

However, I don't really agree with my colleagues' criticism on this point. Gore is careful not to state what the temperature/CO2 scaling is. He is making a qualitative point, which is entirely accurate. The fact is that it would be difficult or impossible to explain past changes in temperature during the ice age cycles without CO2 changes (as we have discussed [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. ). In that sense, the [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. remains an appropriate demonstration of the influence of CO2 on climate.

For the most part, I think Gore gets the science right, just as he did in Earth in the Balance. The small errors don't detract from Gore's main point, which is that we in the United States have the technological and institutional ability to have a significant impact on the future trajectory of climate change.

This is not entirely a scientific issue — indeed, Gore repeatedly makes the point that it is a moral issue — but Gore draws heavily on Pacala and Socolow's recent work to show that the technology is there (see Science 305, p. 968 Stabilization Wedges: Solving the Climate Problem for the Next 50 Years with Current Technologies).

I'll admit that I have been a bit of a skeptic about our ability to take any substantive action, especially here in the U.S.

Gore's aim is to change that viewpoint, and the colleagues I saw the movie with all seem to agree that he is successful.

I thought some of you would want to see this as a response to the original post on this thread...also you should know that in Brittan a large Teachers Union is up in arms that the whole episode happened...they feel like Big Brother is sticking his nose where it isn't needed, or wanted. Just an FYI..I can find and provide a link if anyone wants it...
