Chinese sub pops up in middle of U.S. Navy exercise

When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.

At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.
That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age. The incident, which took place in the ocean between southern Japan and Taiwan, is a major embarrassment for the Pentagon.

Funny how the AP, UPI and New York Times missed this story.

I guess they took that day off. Or maybe it's not so true.

Anything is possible. But I was referring to the listed agencies he noted in case those are the only ones he trusts.

Yeah I know. I was just messing with you. Rebel just posted the UPI link which is one of the places he mentioned. I guess he didn't look hard enough.

Not the first close sub encounter the Kitty Hawk has had.

*snip*

I was stationed aboard the "###### Kitty" for a number of years in a position to know about these type incidents. They were quite common. During a world cruise we constantly had Russian subs popping to the surface around us. It's no surprise the Chinese have decent sub technology, they bought it from the Russians.

And the Russians got a lot closer than torpedo range without us seeing them. In the late 80's the Kitty Hawk underwent a complete refit in Philadelphia and they had to replace the lower section of the bow because it was filled with concrete. The reason it was filled in was because a Russian sub commander who was playing cat-and-mouse with the Kitty Hawk decided he didn't need to turn his boat and do a sonar sweep to the rear before surfacing. When he popped up to see where we were, he found his cat, a 50,000 ton displacement aircraft carrier, barreling down on him at 30+ knots. Lucky for him he was still near periscope depth. The draft on the Kitty Hawk is, if memory serves, is around 45 feet. If he'd popped fully to the surface we would have sliced him in half like a bagel. But, because the bulk of the sub was below that draft, he ended up making his way back home on the surface with a large hole where his conning tower once was. They dry-docked the Kitty Hawk and filled the crunched compartments with concrete.

We even had T-shirts made with a Russian looking KGB guy in a mask flashing his t-shirt that said, "I survived the USS Kitty Hawk"

Oh, and the ###### Kitty is NOT a super carrier. It's one of the oldest in the fleet and it's fully diesel powered. It's damn lucky it hasn't been converted into razor blades.
