In the Shanghai Daily news this morning...

In the Shanghai Daily news this morning...

Iraq and China are close to cutting a deal such that China will be the first
foreign company to gain oil exporation and drilling rights, since
the "US-led invasion in March 2003". They are projecting a 90,000
barrel per day production rate.

They are roughly estimating this to be a $1.2B service contract as a
production-sharing agreement.

So let me get this straight... The U.S. spends its money, resources,
and military lives, so that China can benefit? Does anyone else find
this to be quite outrageous?!?

When will our politicians learn to take care of their own backyard first?

Iraq did not ask the U.S. to invade and rid them of Sadam. They have no reason so show any gratitude, and what they do with their resources is their business.

one of our US oil companies would have likely had that contract. BUT our wonderful politicians told Iraq they shouldn't do no bid contracts for the oil fields.

I'm not really glad to see that China (which is for all intents and purposes tyrannical in it's governing of it's people) is getting more resources, but our money would be better spent trying to replace oil. Whether or not you believe that Hubbert's peak is near or far, no one can argue that oil isn't finite and certainly no one can argue that tying up economic interests in places like Iran and Saudi Arabia is a good thing.

It would be interesting to invest in making coal mining more safe and efficient, and making coal burn more efficiently and cleanly. The US still has a lot of coal. It would also be good to really start investigating real alternative options: getting diesel from algae that can grow anywhere instead of from our food is something conservatives and liberals could agree on.

As for the blame with this China situation, there's plenty to go around.
