People actually were confused in Florida (many of them were interviewed on TV and admitted it), and it may have decided an election. It was a big deal, and I doubt Democrats are going to forget that any time soon.

And yes, there were a lot of people that didn't understand Prop 8 at all. Because they were lied to. Proposition 8 had absolutely nothing to do with schools and it would not ever, ever force any churches to marry gay people. Despite this, advertisements played on local stations during prime time for over a month that had these lies and delivered them, imho, quite effectively. If someone weren't inclined to do a great deal or research, I have no doubt they'd misunderstand Prop 8 completely.

The really funny thing about that 'confusing' ballot is that the dems are the ones that designed it. I'll bet that didn't get reported on the national news, but I lived in Florida when Gore was throwing his little temper tantrum, and the national news didn't put out much at all about what really went on down there.

Why did Gore only want to recount certain counties, not all of them? Both gained votes in the recounts, not just Gore, so Gore would not have won that state anyway.

You also had the news networks calling the state for Gore before all of the polls had closed in that state. The panhandle of Florida is on Central Time Zone, not Eastern. They were told not to start calling the state until all of the polls had closed, but they did it anyway.

Unless you lived in Florida, you honestly don't really know what went on down there because the national media selected the stories they wanted to tell the rest of you. And naturally most of those stories favored Gore, as most of the media did.
