Universities are banning blood drives because they discriminate against gay people

Newcastle and Sunderland Universities’ unions have banned it from advertising in their buildings.
The service does not allow active homosexuals to donate as they are at ‘high risk’ of carrying blood-borne viruses including HIV and Hepatitis B, although this policy may be relaxed in the future.

Greg Du Bois, union president at Sunderland University, said: ‘They don’t allow gay men to give blood and that has been determined as not a satisfactory reason.’

This is one of those posts that just the headline caused me to say 'YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!" You would think by now nothing would be able to get a rise of out me, but I still believe in that bumper sticker that says "If you aren't outraged, you aren't paying attention!" This story is simply outrageous.

So soon if your or a loved one is in an accident and needs blood to live there won't be any because gay people are offended by collection practices. Thanks again libs.

By the way Baack, I love your sig line. We can only hope, without the audacity of course.

The problem is they dont look at the situation in a common scense kinda way like mmmmmmmm MAYBE OTHER PEOPLE DONT WANT HIV OR ANY CHANCE OF GETTING IT and it might be a good idea if I dont donate my tainted blood. What a bunch of #######

I imagine the cost alone to test for HIV is high.
I guess we shouldn't be discriminating against, tuberculosis, Hepatitis, Typhoid.

The part that scares me is the ignorance of people who think that the only people who would have blood borne illnesses are homosexuals...

That is true that you dont have to be a homo to have a BBI but the probability of having a BBI go way up.

It's just a fact Homosexuals are a liability to the blood supply. You don't have to like it, but it is fact.

Considering the mentaility and hate of the homosexual community I can see some AIDS victim purposely infecting the blood supply out of protest.

I am not even going to bother...

HOWEVER, I really think that if I was laying on the bed needing a transfusion, I wouldn't startin beyotchin' about whoever wanted to donate blood to me. I would think that anyplace taking blood donations would check the blood as standard freaking procedure, though - that's just common sense!

They do check the blood that they collect. However, there is a latency period where the levels of the disease are too small to detect, so that blood would appear safe when it really isn't. Here in the US, they don't just disallow homosexuals, but also othe groups of people who might be at high risk. This is all done to keep the blood supply safe so we don't have a return of what happened in the 80's.
