Bob Widd, an arboriculturalist with tree surgery firm Global Tree Solutions, of Willingham, Cambs., said time and weather had formed the tree into its remarkable shape.
He said: "It's a brilliant shape. At first glance it looks like someone has intentionally shaped it like this for a laugh. But it happened naturally.
"There are all sorts of reasons why trees grow into the shapes they do. The nutrients in the soil make a difference, as does the light.
"The weather plays a big part too. In the wind-swept Fens the easterly wind tends to blast off the buds on one side of the trees, which means most of the growth takes place on one side.
"In this case the tree underneath is dead. It was probably killed by the ivy that now completely covers it."
Motorists driving into Milton have been doing a double-take as they enter the village.
Emma Hampton, 26, a commuter from Ely, passes the tree each day.

No, they'll want all our dryer lint and then they'll need extra funding to set up a department of dryer lint assessment, another for dryer lint collection and then dryer lint distribution so they make sure all people have equal amounts of dryer lint except for the people who own dryers because "they can get their own" despite the fact the DDLC (Department of Dryer Lint Collection) collects ALL the lint from the dryer owners.
