Here in Ontario we have 16 nuclear units and 30 some large hydro plants. We also have a couple of natural gas powered units and 2 mega coal burners. The coal burners are history as of 2012 and we have already shut down all the rest of them that we had.
I'm a big supporter of nuclear power. Ontario was set to build a few more this year but the demand for electricty was not what it was expected to be. They will be built down the line when we need more power.

You know. I bet if the power companies were to shut down these coal fired power plants for about 24 hrs people would be begging them to restart em,then those people would forget all about the planet!

My thought on it are this.
The vast majority of people who complain about "saving the planet" dont really give a damn about it. They just want to be with the "in" crowd right now. You know,the ones who say...end coal fired and nuclear power production and build more wind and solar power plants,only because thats the "in" thing to do. Just as it was the "in" thing to vote a black man ( and no this is not intended as a racist comment so dont start! ) into office who promised change!

You could also group these people into the same category as those who think we should put a stop to the death penalty even as crime rates go though the roof! These people speak before they think about the ramifications of those actions and when you point out what the end result of said actions would be they dont care!!

Even though there is no way to store the large amounts of power produced by solar power during the day ( ever seen a battery that big?) not to mention the fact that the wind does not blow all the time, they still want to end the dirty coal and nuclear power production in this country. I know what we can do. Why dont we all just go back to the days of reading by candle light and going to work in the fields by the horse and buggy!

I'm all for saving the earth,we have done a helluva a lot of damage to it in the past 100+ years but people are going to have to face facts. With out coal and nuclear power this nation would come to a grinding halt!

Noble One, you have to realize something about the terrorist organization called the EPA here. Not only do they not want coal plants, they also don't want nuclear plants, windmills (kills birds), solar fields (them poor ground insects might suffer), natural gas (might have to drill a big hole in the ground!!), or hydro power. So tell me what is left?

We have them here too. Just ignore them and they will go away. Those in power know that we need power and they will get it for us come he.l or high water. We don't need crazies to tell us what's good for the environment or bad. All us normal people want to do best for the environment but supplying the people with what is needed first. We feel we can supply our people here with electricty with out burning coal but if we couldn't or if it cost too much well we would just have to keep old king coal going.

Ignore them and they will go away? Not down here they won't. They have a powerful lobbying group and they always find judges willing to side with their ridiculous claims. Yeah we know need power but even Democrats in Washington today do not support nuclear power, nor clean coal technology. I'm still amazed they knew what was in this cap and trade bill and they knew Obama was a global warming alarmist and now they complain?

Thanks for that link. They have changed the date so many times I guess I just got out of date. It just goes to show nowever that coal burning stations really are not necessary in this day and age. If Ontario can do it and still produce energy at a very affordable rate then anyone should be able.

Manitoba is what is left. They have a lot more hydro capability and I don't doubt they would like a long term deal to supply your part of the USA. There current rate is 6.44 cents per Kw.hr. One of the lowest rates in North America.
