UN investigator warns US on use of drones

Lederer, Associated Press Writer – 2 hrs 48 mins ago UNITED NATIONS – A U.N. human rights investigator warned the United States Tuesday that its use of unmanned warplanes to carry out targeted executions may violate international law. Philip Alston said that unless the Obama administration explains the legal basis for targeting particular individuals and the measures it is taking to comply with international humanitarian law which prohibits arbitrary executions, "it will increasingly be perceived as carrying out indiscriminate killings in violation of international law." Alston, the U.N. Human Rights Council's investigator on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions, raised the issue of U.S. Predator drones in a report to the General Assembly's human rights committee and at a news conference afterwards, saying he has become increasingly concerned at the dramatic increase in their use, especially in Afghanistan and Pakistan, since June. He said the U.S. response — that the Geneva-based council and the General Assembly have no role in relation to killings during an armed conflict — "is simply untenable." "That would remove the great majority of issues that come before these bodies right now," Alston said. "The onus is really on the government of the United States to reveal more about the ways in which it makes sure that arbitrary executions, extrajudicial executions are not, in fact, being carried out through the use of these weapons." Alston's warning comes as President Barack Obama is weighing how to overhaul the U.S. approach to the Afghan conflict.

CFR Rep Kerry was asked about the Drones yesterday from a reporter on C-span... He tried to twist it as best he could and made it sound like they were a good thing because they were "Killing the terrorist cells".

The reporter pointed out that they had been killing mostly innocent humans. Kerry commented that it was 'sad but necessary'. Needless to say, I don't agree in this war on terror any more we don't have the time nor the money to keep policing the entire world, and we need to start practicing what we preach, we've killed more innocent people than any other country combined.

The only thing we do differently is justify it better than anyone else ever did.

It's interesting that the people in Pakistan do not agree. Especially after the invasion by the terrorists that no one else is doing anything about.

I realize that Obama certainly won't do that as I believe his ultimate goal is a one world govt and the foundation of that is the U.N., but I'd like to see them out.

Take them, their multitudes of foreign students, their baggage, their millions in unpaid parking tickets and don't let the door hit 'em on the way out.

I would too, there is alot of corruption involving the U.N and it's creation from the very beginning. But not because they won't allow us to kill innocents, because of this one world government garbage they are trying to pull.

I don't consider those who house , feed, clothe and cower from the Taliban, Al Quada or any other bunch of maggot thugs as innocents. I consider them either chicken #### cowards who deserve what they get or sympathizers who deserve worse than they get with a drone shot. You lay down with dogs don't come whining to me about having fleas. You don't want these guys in you village or neighborhood grow a set and fight them. Same goes for those is drug neighborhoods and countries like Mexico.

Better yet have an IED attack on an UN Convoy because we could not have Predator Drones stop them from planting them.
